Help me overclock, I am clueless

I am new to overclocking, but I have quite a bit of knowledge in other aspects of computers.. I have an ECS MCP61PM-GM Motherboard, running a NON OEM BIOS that has the options I need for overclocking. The stock speed of my current processor, an AMD Athlon x2 5000+ is about 2.6ghz. I'd like to overclock it to 3.0ghz or higher. I've been fiddling around with the settings for a while, and for some reason, the clock multiplier setting keeps going back to default.. I've already changed the CMOS battery, and I know my BIOS isn't corrupted... Everything else works fine.. I could use some tips.. and trust me.. I'll return the favour.. :D

do you have a black edition cpu? if not, you cannot overclock by way of the multiplier--you can only go down.
to overclock not using the multiplier, you'd have to up the clock frequency in 5 mhz increments to be safe (base freq is 200mhz). you'd also have to possibly set your ram freq from 800mhz (i assume) to 667 mhz to assure yourself that you don't get the ram out of spec too much if you get an overclock that works. after making changes, boot into windows, fire up cpu-z to check where you're at and run an instance of prime95 to check your stability. repeat process until you blue screen during a prime95 run or if you can't boot into windows at all. adjust settings to last good config and see if it stays steady.
it's important to have an aftermarket heatsink/fan or liquid cooling in place.

i apologize if anything is fuzzy or unclear, i'm trying to remember this off the top of my head (and it's 1:30 in the a.m. right now)

you may or may not--depends upon how high of an overclock you are reaching for and whether or not the cpu wil run stably.

I tried to get in to 230 earlier, and for some strange reason blew a stick of RAM.. I'm not even going to bother.

sorry to hear of your trouble. it's too late to say now if you didn't already know, but overclocking includes an inherent risk of damaging components...

so after the fact, you did set your ram frequency down, right? i assume with an athlon 64x2, your default ram frequency (depending upon your ram) would have been 800mhz... so did you set your ram down to 667mhz or even 533mhz? when you up the clock frequency, the ram frequency goes up with it. so, if you had 800mhz ram default, and you upped the clock frequency to 230, that ram is no longer running at 800mhz, but at a higher frequency that it may not be able to run with out damage occurring.

my first question to you was asking if you had a black edition cpu. if you did, all you had to do is set the multiplier up from its default setting (probably 14.5x or 15x) and move it up to wherever your cpu could handle the setting stably (and possibly upping the cpu voltage to help stability). a non black edition cpu means the process will take a bit longer because of setting frequencies, booting, checking stability and re-doing the process until you find a stable overclock.
