Anybody Know what's really going on with this????????? I have found quite a few frustrated posts off this forum with no real fixes. Cmon MS.

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\Username\Microsoft Office Word Document.docx'.
Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.

Error occurrs: opening .docx & .doc files external to word 2007 ie: double clicking.
.docx & .doc files open OK within word 2007. Also double clicking twice around the error message will open the .docx & .doc files.

Error does NOT occur with xlsx files.
Ran Mircrosoft Office Dianostics: No Causes Found
Ran Microsoft Office 2007 Repair: No Change.
Virus protection is always current and up to date.

System:
OS: Vista Ultimate x64 Bit
Update Status: Current with SP 2
IE: 8.0.6001
Microsoft Office 2007 12.0.6425.1000 SP2

Notes:
Program Association Defaults are set to "Microsoft Office Word" for the following:
.doc
.dochtml
.docm
.docx
.docxml
.dot
.dotm
.dotx

HKEY_Classes_Root
.doc Default REG_SZ Word.Document 8
Content Type REG_SZ application/msword

Persistent Handler REG_SZ (Has value)
Shellex REG_SZ (Value Not Set)
Word.Document.8 (Value Not Set)

.docx Deafault REG_SZ Word.Document.12
Content Type REG_SZ Application/vnd.openxmlformats- office document....
Perceived Type REG_SZ document
Persistent Handler REG_SZ (Has value)
Shellex REG_SZ (Value Not Set)
Word.Document.12 (Value Not Set)

Additional Info Since OP:

I can duplicate the error to xlsx files by doing the following:
Office Button>Options>Advanced>General>"Checking" Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE)

xlsx files return to normal double click opening by unchecking it.

The virus protection software is fully current and up-dated, but I will check into this anyway.

.docx or .doc file extensions are not available in the link provided for "restoring default associations"

Thanks anyway !

Re: HELP: Windows cannot find .docx Make sure you typed the name correctly try again

Update:

Deleting the data file: HKEY _Current_USER....\12.0\Word\Data
will allow the .docx shortcuts to open by double click.

Then the data file rebuilds itself with the same values and displays the same error message on 2nd try.

Data file values:

Default RE_SZ (value not set)
Settings REG_Binary ba 00 72 03 30 01 00 00 96 01 00 00 04 00 00 00 1e...
Toolbars REG_Binary 4a 00 00 00 a0 01 00 00 3a 00 00 00 02 01 ff ff 09 0...

SOLUTION Re: HELP: Windows cannot find .docx

This problem was caused by a COM - ADD-IN DLL

Do the following:

Step 1
Mircosoft Office Button>Word Options>Add-Ins>Manage COM Add-Ins>GO

You will see a list of Add-Ins Available:
De-select / Un-check (1) add in at a time > click OK

Close Word and try to open a .docx by double-clicking the shortcut.

If the .docx will open you now know which COM Add-In is creating the problem.

If the .docx does not open go back and repeat Step 1 and de-select a different COM Add-In and repeat. Continue down the COM-Add In list until you find the COM responsible for the error.

Remember to put a check mark back in the box for the COM - Add-In which did not eliminate the error to keep functionality.

The COM ADD-In which caused this problem was "Win Zip Courier"

They will be getting my bill now.......lol
