I was looking at the Vista help files and it says to use the keyboard shortcut that turns on monitors to get to the New Display Detected dialogue box to set up the undetected display. I guess you'll have to figure out what that is. It say that FN + F5 combination typically works on mobile pcs. You might give that a try.

Are you plugging into a graphics card? Does anything at all happen when you plug in the monitor, e.g., does Windows tell you it doesn't recognize the device.

Where specifically are you plugging in the monitor?

If you're plugging it into a graphics card, are you using the correct type of cable? For instance, if the monitor is VGA, you might need an adapter.

What is your graphics card?

Don't take this the wrong way- do you have the monitor power cord plugged in and the monitor turned on?

I'm asking all this stuff because, if all the connections are correct, when you plug it into your system, Windows should automatically detect it and provide the correct Windows driver. You can always install the driver for a specific monitor later.

I don't know what you mean by second computer. We're talking about one computer.

Can you tell me what the name and model number of your computer is?

You need to activate the 2nd monitor in the monitor control properties

right click desktop, properties, display settings, then extend the monitor to the new one.

Do you mean Personalize\Display Settings? I had thought of that but when he installed the second monitor, I would have expected Windows to say it was installing the software for it but, he said nothing happened.

No, monitors don't get installed, and unless told to use the monitor doesn't activate the monitor.

Did you try what Patonb asked?

If you disconnect the main monitor from the computer and plug the Acer into the same port, does it work?

What is the name and model number for your computer?

You never did tell me if you have a graphics card and, if so, what it is.

The size of the slots is what I was talking about in regards to the use of an adapter. It's the number of pins. The Acer uses 15 pin.

What I wanted to know is the name (HP, Dell, etc.) of your computer and the model number. Please provide it.

In addition, can you use the cable from the first monitor on your Acer to try to connect the Acer.

What is the model number of the HP?

Does the smaller connection on the computer where you're plugging in the ACER have 15 pins or holes?

In My Computer, it says you're running Win 10. Is that an error? If not, I suggest posting in tenforums.com.
