I have one of those MSI 560 TI twin Frozr II OC (forget the whole name) cards on my Vista machine and would like to try the same things as mentioned here but, unfortunately, won't have access to that machine for a couple of weeks due to vacation. If I remember, I'll give it a shot when I can.

I have to agree that dropping to 3 FPS shouldn't occur if the 260 didn't have an issue with the same game.

I'm wondering if increasing the virtual memory would help. I see it's only at 2 Gb and he could set the minimum and maximum both to 12000 Mb. I'm also wondering how much free hard drive space he has.

I've reinstalled the drivers several times, even wiping all remnants of the drivers before installing, how can it be a driver issue?

Not any more "episodes", just ridiculously poor FPS in general. In Team Fortress 2 I very rarely go above 40, and usually am hovering around 20, sometimes dipping to 10. I know someone who has the same card as me, who runs TF2 on 160 FPS. My old 260 even ran it far better.

Did you read up on cpu bottlenecking?

Yeah I did, and I don't really think it should be effecting me this much. Tomorrow I will install my 560 into my brother's PC, and see how that goes. If I get a great FPS in games and what-not, then it must be my CPU. If I'm getting the same kind of performance, then I shall ring up the company I ordered the card from and see if I can't get a replacement/refund. Will report back after I try it.

Okay, after troubleshooting a lot more I have some information that I need help understanding :

I installed my 560SE into another computer, it worked perfectly. 140FPS in TF2, and 35-40FPS on Ultra/High in BF3. From this, it's obvious that the problem is within my computer.

I managed to find what my PSU is after rummaging around inside my computer a bit. It's 950 watts, so that should be well able to power it, shouldn't it? It is 4 years old, but that shouldn't really effect it, right?

So from this, is it definite that my CPU is the one letting me down? (Bold CPU!!!!). I don't understand why it is. I know it's 4 years old but it's still fairly decent, and I never had any trouble with my 260 on the same games. Could anyone shed any light on this?

Okay, this is weird, but the computer is working a lot better today. TF2 runs at around 50-100 FPS on High settings. I would think that it has changed because I've re-installed the card, but I've tried re-installing it at least 3 times previously and it didn't effect it all those times. There's nothing stopping the horrible performance happening again tomorrow, or even later today.

Well, PSU's do go bad. I've only had one do that.

I asked earlier about your free hard disk space and virtual memory.

Best way I can describe what may be happening is like this:

Think of your cpu as a road, and the gpu as a car.

You old setup would be like a Chevy going down a farm road. Now switch your Chevy to a Porchse and travel the same road, it won't be able to o faster cause then the road, aka game information, doesn't let the gpu run.

It uses a 460 ftw, which is better, but it does show you sorta on spec when running well.

It could be reseating and sweeping fixed it, but we'll see.

To change virtual memory, go to Control Panel, System. Then:

1. <LI class=step>In the left pane, click Advanced system settings.
   
   If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
   <LI class=step>On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
   <LI class=step>Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click Change.
   <LI class=step>Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.
   <LI class=step>Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
2. Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click Set, and then click OK. In this step change the minimum and the maximum to 12000 Mb. This is 3 times your RAM.

Working with games and video creates many many temporary files. Thus it is a good idea to frequently run things like the Windows Disk Cleanup utility from Accessories and Reboot (or run something like CCCleaner without the registry cleansing) to clear out temporary files and the recycle bin. In addition, make sure that Vista is set to automatically defrag (see the help file).

It's possible that none of this will help you with your problem but you are starting to run low on hard disk space (in today's world).

Well my FPS was pretty bad today again. I uninstalled MSI afterburner (incase that was interfering in some way), changed my virtual memory, restarted (so the changes could take effect), and my FPS is back up to around 60. I don't know what changed it though ; the restart, the uninstallation or the virtual memory.

After making my last post, I got thinking about it and realized that I failed to mention that when you increase the virtual memory, you lose hard disk free space- something you don't have a lot of. Sorry about that.

Did you try doing a disc cleanup?

You have a good configuration system. You need to get a high version of Graphic card for it. You need to search it, the better way is search online. As you get, you can order it online or can also purchase from the market.

Got my sr-2 built and booted with my 560ti, i can't do 1080, but at 1600x900 I'm averaging 31fps.

I'm betti your system needs a reboot to stay healthy.

His issue builds up over few days- to weeks.. so, something is bogging down the swystem and neeeds refreshing.

I think you've miss understood the problem. He gets good fps, BUT out of the blue, they go from 45fps- 8fps, and only a reboot gets it back to 45fps.
