Solved hibernation broken

Ok guys Vista x64 here too hibernation broken since some week/weeks ago. Had been working for year and a half without any major problems, a few crashes but to be expected. Now it fails every time if the system has been up for more than ~12 hours.

My stuff: Desktop PC, Vista 64-bit up-to-date, 8GB RAM
Symptoms: If the PC has been up for well ~10-14 hours and I hibernate it I get the usual monitor fade (= black screen, that's normal) but it never starts to write the memory to disk (no disk activity on the leds.) I have to hard-reset it and then start windows as usual.. dirty shutdown.

No major changes the last few weeks except windows updates.

Gonna uninstall all Windows Updates for a month back when I get home see if something there broke it. Uninstalled Microsoft Live Essentials 2011 (+ few other services it added.) yesterday but that didn't help it still hangs.

To be continued.

To update, hibernation works if i do it after a fresh start (even on high memory usage) but not after the system has been up for a bit. I've already re-created hiberfil.sys and chkdsk the disk. No errors there. sfc /scannow did report some errors sidebar weather gadget pngs broken nothing major, but hibernation failed tonight again so that wasn't it. Wiped windows updates for a month back now I'll be back soon with a report.

Edit: forgot sfc.

Removing the windows updates didn't help. Waited it out and got a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE/0x0000009F  I'll windbg when I get home.

Didn't get a minidump. I'm using BestCrypt Volume Encryption an it might be interfering with the dump process. Anyways, I cut the power to everything so all USB-hubs, printers, scanner and stuff should be reset thinking something there might have been in a bad state.

I re-installed everything I had removed before (windows updates + live essentials + live essentials 2011) so the system is back up-to-date now. Windows Live Mesh used to crash before it doesn't now, probably not related but who knows this is like finding a needle in a haystack :)

I left the PC on with nothing running and hibernation did succeed tonite. Let's see if it works tomorrow when I got my usual apps and stuff running.

I've got a complete disk mirror but it's three weeks old and it's gonna take a few days syncing them, I'd rather not do that.. it's for the (dreadful) day the disk dies.

does the same issue occur when using standard sleep/standby mode?

Sorry for the late reply. I've only used full hibernation not any sleep/standby but I'll try today see what it does.

It crashed again and in the event log I see DHCP entries ("Your computer was successfully assigned an address from the network, and it can now connect to other computers.") after the hibernation has been initiated, which is a little strange some service/process blocking it maybe (I read somewhere before they can be hibernation/suspend/etc-aware kinda not sure about the details.)

Reverted Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller driver (installed month ago) from 2010-06-23/6.241.623.2010 to 2010-03-04/6.235.304.2010. Maybe. If not I'll remove all USB-devices and plug them in one per day. Lol.

Ok, it actually hibernated successfully this night fully loaded and half day+ uptime which is the first time in weeks.. looking good.

What I did:

- Rolled back Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller driver from 2010-06-23/6.241.623.2010 to 2010-03-04/6.235.304.2010.
- Finished most of the torrents. I had 50+ torrents in uTorrent (2.0.4) before (not that unusual but the disk where I store them was very fragmented might have something todo with the crashes/delays.)
- Upgraded World of Warcraft from year half old version to latest. Probably has nothing todo with the crashes but anyways.
- Upgraded Google Earth to latest. Same as above, probably completely unrelated.
- Upgraded Adobe Reader to latest. ^
