Hello,

There is nothing wrong with this log. There are however some empty entries that you should delete. These are not viruses, just missing files, and all you are doing is cleaning out the old, defunct links to them.

So, run HiJackThis without generating a log, and carefully put a check next to the following items. Be very careful to check the correct items, then click "Fix Checked" at the bottom. Immediately restart your computer. I have also noticed that you are using an old version of HiJackThis, please follow these steps, install the latest v2.0.4 and repost your log. Also, you should run Anti-Virus/Firewall if you are not already. Do not have two different Anti-Virus programs installed on the same machine, but it is safe to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware at the same time. A really good free Anti-Virus is Microsoft Security Essentials: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Hello,

One of the entries has reappeared, but this is normal and to be expected. Do not worry about this entry. The other three have not reappeared.

AVG: AVG Free is a very bad virus scanner and is notorius for missing many viruses. What you should do is uninstall AVG completely and install the free Microsoft Security Essentials. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Hi, installed Microsoft Security Essentials and uninstalled AVG free as you suggested. One thing I miss from AVG is the LinkScanner function, which prevents me from clicking malicious search results. I tried to download it but it is not compatatible with MSE. Are there any other similar free LinkScanner-like functions out there?

You want to make sure that it does not fiddle with homepages, browser settings and does not block dangerous sites (unless you want this) so please read everything carefully rather than automatically clicking Next. Once the install is complete, it will not fiddle with anything. Then once the install is complete, restart your browser and see how good it is! Remember that you do NOT want the subscription service, the free has all the features you actually need. Good luck!

P.S If you are using some really weird, non-mainstream browser such as the "Vista x64 Forums Web Browser" << It does exist but is in the VIP forum so is not accessible to you, then tell me and I will search for a link scanner for you. The McAfee Site Advisor will; work for all mainstream browsers, IE, Firefox etc.

Hi, downloaded McAfee Site Advisor and restarted my computer. However it does not show the safety rating besides each search result, I tried enabling and disabling the add-on, but to no avail. Did anything go wrong?

It is working fine for me :huh: When you manage add-ons, do you see both McAfee Site Advisor Toolbar and McAfee Site Advisor BHO, and are they both enabled? Did you install it correctly as it was an option you could uncheck? Maybe try installing it again?

Just remeber to use several different analysers (search Google) and that they make a huge number of mistakes, which is why I never recommend them. Also, if you want, I will give you a few pointers on what is good and bad, but this will not cover the difference caused by a real virus. Fine, very carefully use the analysers to check a clean file, but do not remove everything, as there a lot of false positives, and if you suspect a real virus, get help from someone.

Hello,

If you suspect a virus, or want to make any change, please consult someone. What I have included here are a few pointers and by no means a complete explanation. This is more for confirming the log is clean.

Use two scanners. The second one is not as good, but you really should use two and compare the results.

Make sure you are using the latest version of HiJackThis.

Take all results with a pinch of salt, and err on the side of caution.

Do not delete the "Gopher Prefix:" no matter what the second analyser tells you.

Under O1, make sure there is nothing nasty. This is the Hosts file and is the easiest way for a virus to redirect security firms websites. Two of the only safe entries are:
O1 Hosts: ::1 localhost
O1 Hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost
This should not be a problem unless a virus is present, in which case contact an expert. Do not delete a localhost entry.

Anything with "(no file)", "(no name)" or "(file missing)" is safe to be deleted. This does not necessarily indicate a virus.

Be warned, the second analyser has a habit of telling you delete Windows files and the Sidebar. Don't.

Just generally look down the log and see if you can account for the files. Virus scanners often show up as bad, so be very careful with these. An example of a real, bad entry may be a randomly name generated file running as a Service(O23) or lurking in the Temp directory (showing up in HiJackThis, maybe in O4) Often temporary files do have strange names so be careful, and if your computer has one of these entries, get help, do not just delete it.

Unless your internet connection is set up manually, delete O17 entries, but again get help with these, as this may indicate a virus.
