I can't change my Virtual Memory, it keeps resetting

I'm trying to move my paging file to a separate HD than what my OS is on. When I do so (My computer, properties, advanced system settings, advanced, settings, advanced, change) nothing seems to happen. Here's the procedure I used:

1) uncheck automatically manage paging file size for all drivers
2) Click the drive I want to have the file page on
3) check custom size input value of 10gigs
4) hit set button
5) click C drive
6) check No paging file
7) hit set button
8) hit ok button
9) hit ok button
10) hit ok button

A window appears that tells me I should restart, but does not give me an option (I restart anyways).

If I return to the window it will show all drives as None under the Paging File Size (MB) column. I tried this in safe mode as well. I have tried using the
automatically manage paging file size for all drivers and it won't change to that as well.

The reason I wanted to do this is because a someone in the beta of a game I'm looking at getting suggested doing this. He has a very close setup to mine and explained that doing this would reduce the load times significantly. Specs of computer are below, if you need any more information let me know.

Windows Vista Business x64
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
eVGA GeForce 8800GTS 512MG (G92)
Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Foxconn Mars P35
Crucial Ballistix 4GB 677 (PC5300)
OCZ 850W Western Digital 150GB Raptor X
Samsung SyncMaster 220WM 22”

Hi Thanat0s,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

I just tried doing exactly what you did, but it worked fine for me. When I went back to check the settings, they were the way I set them. Even before the restart.

You might take a look at this tutorial to see if there may be a minor step you missed. Looking at what you did, it looks like you may have missed the last OK to bring up the Restart window.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/132201-virtual-memory-paging-file-change.html

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I followed that thing line by line. No luck. If I check my disk space, the memory does decrease, but when I go back to look, it shows it being back to 0, but my disk space is still being used. Once I restart, I get my disk space back. It still says that I have 3.5(ish)Gb currently allocated (I assume this means the amount of physical ram -what the OS needs).

Hope that helps.

Again, thanks.

You sure you have permission for that particular operation? Sounds to me like the system is ignoring what you're telling it to do and sets it back to default when you restart because the permissions aren't correct.

It's isn't setting to 'default' it's setting it to 0. The default was for the C drive to have it set to "system manage size". And I should have admin rights. It have go through the user account control window.

Just incase, you might try doing it through the super admin account. There is a tutorial here that tells you how to activate it.

Hi,

Looking at the image you posted, I think I know what might be wrong. You are trying to set a page file on the B: drive. As far as I am aware, B: is reserved for the second floppy drive in those systems that have it, and that the letter allocation for hard drives starts at C:. To verify this, try creating a page file on one of the other drives. You could also try changing the disk allocation letter from B: to another available letter, apart from A:, to see if that solves the problem.
