Solved I can't open html file in IE

I have new computer, widow 7 64bit, IE 8.

I have lots of html files (index.html) but I can't open them in IE, which is my default internet browser. I have to right click it and select open with and choose either Firefox or Google chrome. Why?

Hi Unicorn76,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Go to: File association fixes for Windows Vista and click on the html option and fix the file association for html files. Once done, I believe IE should be able to open them.

Thank you for your reply!

I tried but nothing, first when I right click the registry editor file and then clicked merge, there was an error saying 'Cannot import ... not all data was successfully written to the registry. ...'.
I tried to restart my computer anyway but it didn't work! :-(

I'm not sure if the original link will work with Windows 7 or not - your profile says you're using Vista.

The other article should work in a similar fashion - but provides more alternatives and manual methods. It was designed for Vista. Although some of it may work with Windows 7 (or there is most likely a way to do it in Windows 7 that may or may not differ), I can't guarantee that it will be the same or that all the alternatives provided will function properly or as stated if used in Windows 7.

I don't think i need to open it with its default program. I know the html file can be open with IE, it is just IE, somehow, can't open it, it say Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Am I missing somthing? Sorry I am not an expert.

If the problem is only with IE and not the other browsers, let's check out IE to see if we can find the problem:

Unfortunately it hasn't been resolved, i have just notice if I save a web page as html document on the desktop and than try to open in IE, it does work, but if I save it in my Network location (Z: ) it doesn't work. If I save it on the E: drive (a shared driver from where I mapped the network drive), it does work. The same thing I did using the index files I was trying to open and it does the same thing.

My college, from his computer, can open those files from the network drive!

I hope it is clear I am not sure if i have word it properly.

If it works for E: but not for Z:, then it appears there's a problem with the mapping setup or process. I'm not sure why it would open directly but not when mapped - it is perplexing. I recommend you remove/delete the map and then re-map the drive (being sure to use all the proper settings and configurations) and see if that resolves the problem.

If not, then, as previously requested, please post further questions in www.sevenforums.com where people specialize in Windows 7 rather than Vista. The options, procedures, and solutions may be quite different and I don't want to cause you any harm by providing incorrect information because I'm not familiar with networking in Windows 7.

for vista right click the html file choose properties then click change button and select ie as your browser.
