I need serious help.

Dear Americano,

I think you might of misunderstood what I said. (or other way around)
Let me try to say it again more clearly.

First time when I disable all service I was able to click the start tab. (But only one time). When I immediately reboot, even with all services disable I wasn't able to click the start tab. I reboot many times to see test to see if it would work, but it was only the first time that I was able to click start tab. I tested it twice just right now... but it does not work. So my conclusion is that maybe it is not service or program that is preventing it from being able to use the start tab.

If I was able to click start tab every time all problems are disable, then I can go from one at a time to find out which is causing the problem. But the thing is... even with all disable, the problem still exists. So my thinking is... it must be something else.
If I'm wrong with my logic, then please explain it again for me.

Thank you! Thank you! I really appreciate all your help.
I'm willing to try anything else.

Can you please tell me how to do a clean install?

I changed the booting sequence to CD drive first and install vista os that came with
dell computer. Is there something that I should be careful with selection?
Right now I have c and d partition. Do I keep it the way it is?
Maybe some step by step explanation will be greatly appreciated.
After re installing the vista five times... I don't know anymore.

Thanks!~

Hi John,

If you're going to do a clean install, as per Americano's post and the tuitorial, please note the following.

If you've got room on your D:\ drive, I'd suggest you download the Service Packs separately and save them there. then, after Vista installs, apply SP1 and then SP2 before you go to the Windows Update site. It'll save you considerable time.

SP1 Download

SP2 Download

I finally got ready to do a clean install... hope this time everything works okay.
(I'm on a different computer now)
While I was installing windows vista, because my left mouse click didn't work....
I couldn't click accept the license term at first.... I had to use keyboard to move around and finally able to check yes. I was able to move the mouse around but
just could not left click with the mouse. I hope after format this mouse issue
goes away for good. I'm crossing my fingers..(this is my 6th attempt!)

A quick question... after the installation is completed. Do I take cd out and let it boot from the hard drive?

After the installation... do you want me to update windows up to sp2? or just wait
for the instruction? I haven't install any drivers at all either.
Please response^^

Here is the problem... I haven't update windows yet. I haven't install any drivers yet.
My mouse moves around but can't click on start tab. What to do now? Please help!

EDIT: I just remembered now... the problem started just soon as the windows installation was completed. Very weird. I format the hard and did completely new install. What can be the problem now?

My Computer

Just to avoid confusion, John, yes, remove your CD/DVD and let ii reboot from hard drive.

Then, after Vista comes up and you've logged in, close the welcome screen and apply the Service Packs as per my previous post. Only then should you go to Windows Update; keep going there until there are no more updates to apply. Then, you need to reinstall any other programs you use.

Dear Ed,

The problem is that I haven't done the update, drivers and programs yet....
I can't click on start tab... and left mouse click as well.

I did clean install hoping that this problem would go away. It's still here.
Do you think if i update vista, then the problem would go away?

My Computer

Could this be a hardware problem such as hard drive?
What are the possible problems?
Should I get a new hard drive?
Help Please~ very frustrated here.

My Computer

How many USB ports you got? I didn't read anywhere that you tried operating the same mouse plugged into a different USB port. Did you do that?

Shine a light into the mouse USB connector (the male end) and see if anything's blocking the four terminals from electrical contact. Do the same thing with the computer end (the female end). You'd be surprised at what can get jammed up into those things: dead spiders; big pieces of lint; one time I read about some guy's kid puttying over his ports because he wanted to make molds of them!

4 USB ports in front... and 4 USB on back. I don't think it's a mouse issue. I have 4 USB mouse and tried all of them on all 8 USB ports. They all react the same. I took my regular usb mouse (the one that I use on this computer) and plug it in other computers... they just work fine.

I just cleanly installed vista. Same problem. I didn't install any programs at all. I think I can confidently say that it is not a program issue. My current mouse works just fine on other computers and other mouses don't work on this computer. So I don't think it is mouse issue. I formatted hard drive for 6th time today hoping somehow the issue would be resolved but didn't. I'm getting really tired and feel sorry for asking for advise for so much.

Lastly, when mouse is not working I press ctrl+Atl+del to open the task manager,
there are high CPU usage. I'm just feel like maybe something is using high cpu and that is causing it problem. Do you guys know what could caus high cpu usage?
Can it be the cpu fan not working probably? or something is using lots of power or something?

Thanks again.

My Computer

Hi John,

Don't worry about asking for advice; that's why we're here.

I think you're right; it has something to do with your hardware, but, at this point, not sure what, but possibly USB. Do you have a regular mouse that you can plug into the PS2 port? If so, try that.

If not, look at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88849-mouse-keys.html?ltr=M&filter[11]=Hardware%20and%20Drivers and Teach end users to navigate Windows without a mouse.

Where are you with the Vista reinstall? Have you applied any of the Service Packs or updates yet, or just the initial install?

Let's start from there. If we can get you to control the computer, then we can look at the mouse problem

Ed

I bet with a Linux OS your mouse would work absolutely fine.

Download and burn a copy of this to a CD or DVD. It's Knoppix, which is Unix, and it's a boot CD with utilities and browsers and programs and things and it needs no permanent hard drive installation to work. It works right from CD. You don't need to complete the Vista install for Knoppix to work; heck, you don't even need a hard drive. It has its all of its own drivers on the CD. None of this matters.

What does matter is, Knoppix is completely different OS code . If your mouse works fine with the Unix OS running then you've got a copy of Vista with errors.

You could get a new copy of your Vista disk here but, shoot, why not take the opportunity to upgrade to Win7? Maybe if you tell them that the other product they sold you is faulty you can get a discount on 7!
