I want to get a hard drive

So i am getting a hard drive but i really dont know anything about these so i wondered if the community want to share their hard drives of what they are running.....also i have found one and wanted to know if this is a good buy?is it any good? Western Digital 500GB SATA Internal Hard Drive | Staples®
and if i do get this one will all the cables come with the hard drive and i also dont know how to set one up

Hello Vistaftw,
Before you get another HDD, just make sure that your system is Sata and not IDE.
You should get the data cables with the HDD, again, just check with the store that you get the power leads.
WD make great HDD's, so no problems there.
I was going to get another HDD, but decided to wait a bit, until the digital drives come down in price a bit.

I use Firelite 160GB USB powered. Very sleek, fits in computer bag pocket. No Ac adapter.

For Desktop external HDD's, I have a Seagate 1TB and a Verbatim 500GB.

Have had the Firelite for over a year now, the Verbatim 500GB for 10 months, and the Seagate 1TB for about 2 months. I have had zero problems with all 3.

Setting up should be very easy with the Western Digital, as it is with my brands. It should just install the device driver once you plug it in.


Are you planning on storing files over 4GB in size? If you are, once you have access to the drive via windows, right click on the window, go to properties, and find out what file format the drive comes in. My Verbatim and Firelite HDDs both came in FAT-32. I had to convert them both to NTFS in order to allow files over 4GB.

The Seagate, which I just recently purchased, came pre-setup for NTFS file format. That is why I think the Western Digital may come NTFS ready.
As far as I know Western Digital is a good brand.

Whats the difference between external and internal?

Well internal is inside your machine, And external is outside of your machine usually connected via USB, Firewire or other cable.
I prefer both actually, the internal has O.S., programs, etc., The external I use to store backups, all my personal data(pictures,media and other important stuff) that I don't want to lose incase of a tragedy like a internal hard drive crash or the O.S. becoming corrupted beyond repair.
So I have both for those reasons.
