Inaccessible Drive

I have got a problem on my wife's laptop.... while using the laptop to copy files (ebooks) onto the hard drive from the DCD/CD Rewriter, after a period of success, I suddenly got the 'Location is not available' window, with the message "F:\ is not available. Access is denied" I tried a couple of other disks, to no avail.
I checked the driver was up to date, the Device Manager says the drive is working properly, I've fixed any registry errors, all with no luck. I'm afraid I'm not a very knowledgeable user, so would appreciate any answer in fairly plain English!!!
Hope someone can help.

Using system restore, return to good times. A week before the problem
Stop using that maintenance software.

OK Guys,

Many thanks for that, it's late here and I'm off to bed (us pensioners need our sleep). I'll do a restore in the morning and let you know how it went.
