installation of new hdd windows transfer

No, Macrium makes an image, like an iso would be for a dvd, so the only reason you need the external drive is to hold the file, 56Gig in size, so that macrium can then reconvert it to the new empty drive.

If you're not caring about storage capacity, I'd go with a WD Blue drive.

Scan.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk are actually bigger than ebuyer I think, but its all your choice so ebuyer is just fine.

hi not sure i explained myself properly.

i would like to know if i can boot from the image on the external drive temporarily until i buy my new hdd.
right now i have a hdd that is on its way out.(internal)
but i have an external usb hdd drive. i was wondering if i could copy the internal drive to the external and test it to see if its ok before i get the new internal drive then if that is possible i would be able to insert new internal drive boot from external format internal and transfer the image from external to new internal.

ok thank will probably go for the w.d blue then i will check those but am in uk so would be unsure of delivery etc?

thanks

have just checked those links are uk so will take a look theer thanks

Billy,
The best thing to do is to make an image. When you get a new hard drive you transfer the image to the new drive. The other methods that you are suggesting is not the way to go. Take your time and do it properly to be sure that it works and works the way that it should. Although, it may be a pain now, you will get the best results and me much happier with the final product.
If we do not talk again for a while, a very Happy New Year to you and your loved ones.
Rich

Yha, i seen you were from the UK, and thosev 3 are the big 3 etailers for computers. I did lok but ebuyer was the best price.

I did understand, I didn't quite explain it right.

No, you can't run the backup image as your OS. Its not really the proper formate needed, as i had said its a file that contains the files.

I would use your laptop as it is, but store everything on a usb stick or hard drive in case it craps out.

so if i made a clone of my internal onto my external using macrium and booted from that would that not work as my os drive until i get my new internal? (without affecting my current internal) so that i can keep my current internal to create an image of that when the new drive comes? (i guess the question is can i have my os on internal and clone to boot from on my external) without one affecting the other in respect of licenses etc

I guess you technically can as long as your BIOS allows you to boot to a USB.

You'd make the macrium backup, then run the macrium backup disk/usb and put the backup image onto the usb drive.
You need to make a separate partion on the usb drive to do this.

Then seting your bios to boot off the usb, it "should" work. I would only do this is your drive actually fails as it will be ungodly slow!

i have created a clone of my Cndrive however cannot boot from it for some reason?
itried changing boot order to boot from usb and it still booted from internal laptop drive
i removed internal laptop drive then tried to boot from external again but it said no bootable device inserted
i think it has something to do with windows not being able to have two C drives at same tiime so macrium has named the clone drive as E. but unsure how to work round this as if i leave my os drive in i cant change the drive letter to C as the main internal is named C. if i take C drive out i cant access disk management to change external drive letter to c?

You cannot restore an image to a USB stick. Creating a bootable USB stick is a bit more complicated - see here. Besides, you need a very fast USB3 stick, else it will not really work.

Billy, what you are trying to do is not going to work. Get a proper disk and restore the image.

Ah, see I wasn't sure on that, and seeing as I followed your guide to swap my HD, I'm believing you.

im not trying to boot from usb?

i will try to explain again..
i have created a clone of my laptop C drive. i have the clone stored on a external HDD problem is i cannot boot from the clone as it is named G instead of C as windows will not let me name my external HDD as C..as my internal is already named C. so i removed my internal but still cannot boot from external HDD as it is named G but cannot rename to C as cannot access windows disk management to rename the disk with out my origional internal c drive installed. (catch 22) is there a way to make the macrium clone on external HDD bootable? then i could remove my internal and boot from and use my clone on the external HDD

thanks
