Installshield

I have installshield on my pc. My inspector programme tells me that it will no longer be updated and, therefore, it should be uninstalled (as a security measure).

I have a number of options.

Use a programme that removes the registry entries, but leaves the programmes on disk. There are references in the registry;
Switch-off automatic updates in the update manager (installshield);
white-list installshield in the inspector program.

The programme cannot be uninstalled in Programs and Features (not listed).
Evidently, I should not manually delete the programs.

I don't know what to do.

Advice please.

Perfect uninstaller and revounistaller will both force an uninstall (by removing the registry entries) as well as remove the files however they must be used with care. I don't know what software you are using but before you start following it's advise and uninstall everything that it lists as some kind of security threat you might want to research what you are removing to find out if it should be left alone. Take installshield-a simple google search shows what it is used for. It is used by developers to aid in the installation and removal of their programs which probably explains why it doesn't show up in programs and features. Therefore if you force an uninstall of installshield you could mess up other programs and find that you can't remove or maybe even use them. My advice to you is to leave installshield alone. Also take care when using any registry cleanup software because if it damages the registry you could start having windows or program errors or possibly not be able to boot into windows depending upon the level of damage.

If I leave installshield in place, I assume that you would advise me to allow the update manager to continue to check for updates (I can disable this function)?

If I do this, I will white-list the programme in my inspector programme.

Since installshield will no longer be updated, it may present a security hazard. Is it possible to protect against any possible hazard due to an outdated programme? I don't want to buy installshield, I obtained the current version as pre-instlaled software when I bought the pc.

Installsheild is bundled with other software. There isn't anything for you to update or buy.

Bearing in mid my previous comments, what is you advice?

Do you know the relationship between Windows Installer and InstallShield. Do I need both?

Ps. When you say there is nothing to update, all programmes become out of date unless updated, and hence can become security hazards.

If installshield is removed or disabled, I could remove other programs installed by installshiled using another uninstaller, but would those programmes be able to update?

I would leave it. If you want to update anything update the software it came with. Leave windows installer alone. It is necessary to install Windows updates as well as other programs.

I have no idea where Installshield came from, I always assumed that it came with my pc at build.

As a matter of interest, is there a relationship between Windows Installer and InstallShield, or are they completely independent?

When installshield tells me that it needs to check for updates does this mean that installshield is checking for updates to itself, or for application updates, or both?

Am I right in thinking that developers only use installshield, rather than the Windows installer, so that their programmes can be installed on either Window, Linux or Mac systems?

I wonder why developers use installshield. If its only for Windows, then why don't they use the Windows Installer - available on all Windows machines?
