I used Norton AV 2012 and it didn't pick it up. Can you suggest what else I might use? I was thinking about uninstalling Norton anyway.

Welcome
If the problem just began recently, go back a week before the problem with system restore.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html
If that does not work, download and use Malwarebytes.
It is free and should be used in conjunction with your AntiVirus. A good anti virus is Microsoft Security Essentials.
Any antivirus may miss malware and that is why Malwarebytes should be used as a weekly scan.
Many of our members scan weekly with Malwarebytes and use Security Essentials, too.

Is it in Control Panel > Programs and Features?

Does it show up on the 'Uninstall' list?

If so, uninstall it from there.
If not, please do the following...

Download AdwCleaner:
http://general-changelog-team.fr/fr/downloads/finish/20-outils-de-xplode/2-adwcleaner
Save to the desktop.

Close all open programs.
To run the program, right-click AdwCleaner.exe and select: Run as Administrator
At the program console, click on Search and confirm the prompt.

After it finishes, the computer is restarted.

A text file report opens after the restart.

Please post the content of the AdwCleaner report to your reply.
(A copy of the log is also saved at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt)

Also download the Junkware Removal Tool:
Junkware Removal Tool Download
Save to the Desktop.

Make sure you temporarily disable your AntiVirus, Firewall, and any other AntiSpyware applications.
These programs may interfere with the running of JRT.

For information on how to disable protective programs, refer to this info:
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs - BleepingComputer.com

Right-click JRT.exe and select: Run as Administrator

The tool opens and starts scanning the system. Please be patient as this can take a while...

When done, a report (JRT.txt) is saved on the Desktop.

Please post the contents of JRT.txt in your reply.

I tried Free Malwarebytes and since that didn't do it and isn't even real-time protection, I uninstalled it and got Spybot - Search & Destroy. That didn't work, but I kept it and got the Junkware Removal Tool which did get the Adware.

JRT didn't remove the adware, I see it again in the notification area.

Please run the following diagnostics to check what is currently going on with the system:

DDS Download
Save to the Desktop.

Right-click DDS and select: Run as Administrator

When done, DDS opens two logs:
-DDS.txt (Opens on the Desktop)
-Attach.txt (Minimized on the TaskBar)

Please post both reports (do not attach) in your reply.
