Not sure why this update is failing to install. This is a Dell Inspiron 1525 with OEM installation. SP2 Vista Home Basic. Not sure what other process is in use. No known viruses (verified with multiple AV units), have done clean boot, windows update readiness tool, still failures. All other updates successfully installed even SP2, IE9, etc etc.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Hi, sorry none of the initial suggestions worked.
Did this happen during the time of the monthly releases from microsoft?
We have a number of queries about updates going on in this section @ the moment.
A suggestion to a possible solution for another thread, May be a guide to a solution for you.
Please try the link suggested by our expert NICK ADSL UK for the other update dillema:-
How to troubleshoot Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 service pack installation issues
Thank you.

At the risk of being redundant, here is the Windows tutorial :

I did try a clean boot and it failed. I can check again incase I forgot to check a setting. I thought you couldn't run windows update from safe mode? Unless I forget to run with networking, last time I tried it said the WU service couldn't be started in safe mode.

This update has failed since I retrieved it the other day. Girl who had it, never updates it, and hasn't used it in awhile since the power jack needed replacing. I don't hand people back PC's without cleaning them up, so I noticed this failed update after starting them.

My Computer

Hi,
Indeed not, the point of the "clean boot' is it helps to eliminate software conflicts.
Trying to put things back in order. After a clean boot , restarting & back into normal mode sometimes the update will install.
Have you followed all the suggestions in the above links? Have you tried each section of preparation for installing the update?
Post back with the results.

Sorry to interrupt your wonderful advice Keith, but can I suggest that you try Resetting Windows Update Components?

Don't worry about all of the manual steps, just run the Fix It tool by clicking on the button:

(Sorry there's two buttons, that's the image on the server!)

I've got an idea but I need to check the viability of it with a user. He's not online at the moment so I'll leave him a message and I'll get back to you when I have a reply :)
