Keyboard typing garbage

I can be typing along and all of a sudden, everything I type if gibberish. The only way to clear this is to reset my pc. Is this a problem that can be corrected or do I have gremlins living on my motherboard? It happens on both my 32-bit laptop and my 64-bit workstation.

Hello Ray and welcome to the forums

Is this an internal or external keyboard?

Thanks for the reply.

This is an internal keyboard.

I'm still tying to find my way around the forum so be patient.

No worries Ray, it took me a long time to get to grips with it all.

Can you do this for me please:

1. Open the start menu
2. Type Device Manager in the search box
3. Click on Device Manager
4. Open the Keyboards category
5. Right click on the entry in there and select "Update Driver Software..."

Then reboot. If that fails, then try uninstalling the driver and rebooting.

Hi Ray,

Can you give an example of what happens? You say that you have a laptop. Because of the necessarily smaller keyboard, with fewer keys than a standard PS2/USB unit, some of the keys have several functions. This is typically controlled by the Fn key. Is it possible that you are inadvertently catching this key as you type? Another possibility is oversensitivity of the trackpad (mouse).

Thanks for the replies.

I will UD my drivers.

As for an example of what I see, it's quite simple - what ever key is typed, some other character is displayed. The strange thing that occures is that if I select the same key over and over again, a different character is displayed each time. It's almost like a random character generator.
