Kicked back to Login screen after inactivity

Hi,

I've probably posted this here before, but I'm about at my wit's end regarding this issue. When my computer is idle for a period of time (and it varies), the screen goes black and then switches back to the login screen. For a while, it was only doing it after several hours of inactivity, but now it's mere minutes. I thought I was the only one with this issue, but I stumbled across this post from March 2009, from user Raechul:

"I have searched everywhere and can't figure out how to keep this computer from going to the login screen after being idle for ten minutes!

I saw this thread and it was not what I needed- my settings are already set to not show the login screen, so I'm still at a loss.

Does anyone know how to stop it from going to login annoyance?"

I checked the highlighted link, but found nothing to solve my problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the nVidia graphics drivers. I've updated said drivers through Windows Update. I've done a full malware and virus scan. I've disabled hibernation, I've checked my power settings, I've disabled the screensaver. Nothing seems to make a difference.

My computer is an Acer Aspire 4520 laptop, nVidia GeForce 7000M graphics, AMD Athlon x2 64bit processor, Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit version. Screen resolution is 1280 x 800. All of the "wake on" settings are disabled, and in my power settings the "require login on wake" is disabled as well.

This is really getting annoying. I hope there's someone brainy-er than I am out there who knows what's going on. TIA for your help.

Do you have your laptop set to go to sleep after a set time?

Just finished looking at others with the same problem.
They say to install the service pack for .NET Services. (from Microsoft)
Also check your screensaver is not set to lock the screen.

No, I have disabled sleep while on AC power. And since my battery only lasts 30 minutes, I don't use the battery.

Also check your screensaver is not set to lock the screen.

The screensaver is disabled, and the checkbox requiring a password is unchecked (just to make sure :D). I'll try the .NET service pack, but I think I have the most recent one (I'm on Ubuntu right now, so I'll have to reboot into Vista and see what's going on).

What, exactly, does the .NET framework do for me anyway? I don't use Microsoft Office, and I've disabled the .NET plugin for Firefox since they installed it without my permission anyway (and disabling it doesn't seem to adversely affect my browsing experience anyway). If it doesn't really accomplish anything for me, would it not be better just to uninstall it?

UPDATE: I have both .NET framework 3.5 SP1 as well as .NET framework 4.0. Could there be a conflict between the two?

Yeah, my power settings are set to "Don't require a password", and the screensaver is disabled.

And regarding the .NET framework, I'd be a little afraid of uninstalling it because I don't know what programs require it. I may, however, uninstall 3.5 SP1 and leave version 4 intact, in case there is a conflict between 3.5 and 4.

Make a restore point before you do this.
I am not sure what will happen when you do that.

Well, I uninstalled .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, but left 4.0 alone. Let's let it sit overnight and see what happens.

No change in the status. In fact, it now kicks me off with apparently no rhyme or reason. Windows Update wanted to reinstall .NET 3.5 SP1, so I hid it. I don't notice any problems without it.

At any rate, I'm officially stumped. Short of taking my system back to "out-of-box" condition, I don't know what else to try.

dan1701a,

If you create a new administrator type user account, restart the PC,
and log in to and use only the new account, does the problem persist?

(Changing the settings as you have with the existing account - re:
screensaver, sleep, power options, etc.)
