Laptop Keeps Freezing

About two years ago I bought a Vista HP laptop. Recently when I went on vacation with my children the snow storm holed us up in the hotel with nothing to do. So they used my laptop alot. After this, my laptop did not work properly. About 1 minute after I turn it on it will freeze completely. After about ten minutes it will unfreeze but proceed to execute all of the clicks I made during the time it was frozen. I am at about an intermediate stage when it comes to computers. Please Help!

If it were mine, I would check with the Anti Virus and a download an use malwarebytes to check for malware. If all is clean just do a system restore from a time before the incident.

They could have done any number of things, including downloading a virus.

It does sound strange, in addition to what has been said, is there constant hard drive activity?

click on the start orb and type msconfig into the search pane
Click continue to allow it to run.

Click on Startup and look for anything strange.
Click on the tick to get to stop anything from loading at the startup.
You can do this one at a time in order or disable all to begin with.
Look in the services to see if there is anything there that could be causing the hold up.

I followed rchc46's advice and downloaded that anti-malware software but my computer won't stay unfrozen long enough for it to take care of the problem. It has been scanning for about 4 hrs. now and has been frozen for 3/4 of that time. It so far has found 1 infected object which I am sure is the root of the problem. Any help?

If you definately found malware or a virus and you are having problems, I suggest that you repost in the security forum. The members that are in that forum are very knowledgable in the area that is causing your problems.

Overheating is one of the frequent causes of freezing and other errors in your HP Laptops. So, if your laptops keeps freezing then the first and the most important thing that you would have to check is whether your fan is working or not. If your fan is not working then you would have to buy a cooler pad for your HP laptop. The cooler pad which sits under your laptop would prevent it from getting overheated.
