Ok heres the story...
my friends laptop froze, he waited a bit to see if it would come back but it didnt. so he rebooted it...but it didnt come back on...we tried again and eventually it started but he cant access windows because it says that there is something wrong and that windows cannot repair it...

He isnt amazing with pc's so he gave it to me so I could have a go at gettin it back on track... so far nothin has changed same screen comes up sayin that windows cannot repair itself... says something about the file " system32/drivers/kkmbyd.sys" is corrupt...
I tried to restore to an earlier point in time but it wont work cause it says that there are no earlier versions saved...
They only idea that came into my head was to fully restore windows, but his hardrive has a lot of valuable data and im worried it will be lost...
any help will be apriciated

You could try to do a repair installation, as told in this tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

It is like upgrading the old OS with new OS but in this case, the old and new are the same. It keeps all personal data, installed applications and so on, at the same time repairing or rather replacing system files.

Ok thanks...can I restore the pc from safe mode, because when i turn the pc on I have only 5 options :
- repair pc
- restore to an earlier state
- complete restore (from back up)
- check for memory errors
- open cmd.exe

You can not run repair install in safe mode. I read your original post once more, maybe it would be better to try system file check first.

Do this: Boot Vista to Safe Mode. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories. Right click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator.

Type sfc / scannow and hit Enter. Let the system file checker run, when it's finished exit Command Prompt and reboot to Windows normally. Come back to tell if sfc fixed the issue.

Have you tried to boot to safe mode? Take the DVD out, hit F8 when rebooting and choose Safe Mode.

If you have tried and it does not work, boot from DVD and choose Startup Repair. Follow the instructions on screen.
