Messenger now powering over 2.8 billion minutes of Facebook chat

We’re excited to announce today that Facebook chat is now available to over 75 million more Messenger customers worldwide, wherever Facebook is available.

Nearly 18 million people now driving over 2.8 billion minutes of Facebook chat on Messenger

In November, we gave an update on Messenger powering over 1.5 billion minutes of Facebook chat. Since then, the number of Messenger customers who have connected Messenger to Facebook has grown over 75% to nearly 18 million people. The addition of these new connections has nearly doubled the number of chat sessions between Messenger and Facebook to about 440 million, powering more than 2.8 billion minutes of Facebook chat. We expect even more progress with the availability of Facebook chat from Messenger to the remaining countries we’re releasing this feature to today.

But it’s not just Facebook. We’ve been working to build partnerships with Messenger that help customers connect to their friends across their different social networks. The number of connections Messenger customers are making to LinkedIn has more than doubled since our last update. Meanwhile, MySpace and YouTube connections have grown nearly 50% to remain among the top services among more than 75 great services that customers are connecting to Windows Live.

Chat with your Facebook friends from wherever you use Messenger

Now, no matter where you live in the world, you have one place to chat with all your friends, whether they’re on Messenger, Facebook or both. Once you connect your Windows Live account to Facebook, you can choose to turn on Facebook chat and Facebook updates in Messenger, letting you access these Facebook features from any place you connect to Messenger, like from your Hotmail inbox, or from the Messenger iPhone app. So even if your friends don’t have Messenger and Facebook connected, you can still chat with your Facebook friends from wherever you are…they’ll get your messages right in Facebook just as they would any other instant message.

Download the new Messenger as part of Windows Live Essentials 2011 today and see how you can use Facebook chat in Messenger. Facebook chat will start to roll out in these new markets later this evening.

We’re excited that we can now bring this deep integration with Facebook to our customers worldwide, wherever people use Facebook, and we look forward to continuing to partner with the leading services that our customers use across the internet.
