Microphone not showing up.

So i was trying to plug in my microphone and it does not wanna recognize it in Sigmatel audio control panel it looks like a ? like this (1) and well on my sound in recording devices it shows as if theirs something there but i can't use Skype at all any idea like on here (2) what is going on am i missing something. also my computer is a dell Inspiron 1420.

I don't understand why it's showing a codec instead of a device.

Try disabling your speakers in the Playback when you plug in your microphone.
