Suggestions only :
Before anything, run a full virus scan on your computer. Then........

1. Do a system restore. Pick the date when all your contacts were present as your restore point.

2. Go to your webmail site > logon to your account > find if your contact list is intact there.

Did both of those before first posting. Virus scan clean. Restored back 48 hours, even though everything worked fine 12 hrs ago. Any other suggestions? thx

Shadow explorer is fine. It has been used by many. I dont see a problem
That being said, its your computer and you have to be comfortable with its use.
If you have any concerns about using this software, it is not worth the small gain that it may bring.
It is even on the suggested software list published by our affiliated forum, Seven Forums

Thanks Richard, I found backups in C drive but couldn't import as folder, so did manual import one by one. Good thing my address book is small!

Glad that it all worked out.
May I suggest that you back up everything once a week. There is fine software like Macrium Relfect, that will let you back up your entire hard drive, once a wek.
If you ever have to reinstall and you have a back up, you have no problem. Good luck
