My Windows Vista is ABout 43 GB!!!

Hello every body.
i have a question about size of windows vista.
my laptop have a Vista home premium that is pre-installed on it. my c: partition that the windows is installed on it have about 55 GB capacity, and now it has only 11 GB free space. i want to know is it normal that windows uses about 43 GB of my C: capacity? i want to add that i installed other softwares on F: partition and only 700 MB of the C: is for program files, also Temp and Users folders are empty, and there is a folder with name SwSetup that it's size is 2.5 GB.
so I want to ask again is it normal that windows vista home premium size be about 43 GB?

No its not normal for the OS alone to use that space. Over time other factors are responsible.

If you want to see what is using the space download and use windirstat.
http://windirstat.info/

To be on the safe side you may want to make a full antivirus scan and download and run malwarebytes full scan and updated.

Thank you for your attention. i cleaned my C: partition and then analyzed my C: partition with Tuneup Disk Space Explorer and the result is in attached file (i only take picture from big files, others were small). and i want to say again that the C: capacity is about 55 GB.

Click on windows, lets see whats in there.
You are just about double my size. Just a guess, untill I see what you have in there, but it might just be a Windows.old, which we can delete.

I tried to locate large files in Windows folder in C: and i listed top 5 big folders in Windows Folder below, they are:
1- winsxs (12.3 GB) 2- System32 (4.8 GB) 3- assembly (682 MB) 4-Microsoft.net (430MB) 5- Fonts (395 MB)
with this information, may you say what is the problem?

If you click in windows, that shows in widirstat, it will show you what makes up the total. Maybe we can solve your problem.

Winsxs its probably your back up taking more space mine is 541MB

I follow this thread with great interest as I have been having doubts about the balance in my computer.

Looking at the screenshot in the last post, i'm definately questioning mine now!

My Windows total is 19.6Gb

winsxs reading is 11.6Gb

And C: Total reads 32.5Gb

I will be following with interest. I think mine needs a overhaul!!

The winsxs difference is probably due the the amount of restore points space that is used. Click on winsxs to see the break down. If you do not have windirstat download it so we are all on the same page.

Back to this age old question! winsxs and junctions always cause confusion!

The winsxs folder is actually only a lot of hard links. For the most part, it stores a lot of different versions of the same file. However, if version 1 is in use, winsxs doesn't just store another copy of it, it hard links.

This is basically a toughened shortcut. However, Windows Explorer sees it as another copy in terms of file size. So actually, your winsxs folder is likely only 500-1000mb, no matter what Windows says.

(Note for technical users: There is a debate raging on saying that if Windows thinks it is so big, it says that the hard disk may be fuller than it actually is, and so that space may actually be wasted and unusable anyway!)

Note that this will mean that you will never be able to uninstall updates prior to and including Vista SP2 again, so make sure that this doesn't affect you.

P.S. How much space is C:\System Volume Information taking up. Certain backups and system restores live here, and mine nearly gave me a heart attack when I just looked two seconds ago- taking up 134GB!

I don't really want to carry unessessary dead weight.

However,it may be ok and I am better off leaving things alone?

I think that the only thing that you can do is delete the system restore points, and then just make a new one for emergency. That will free up space in winsx. As time passes it will full up with more restore points. I would just let it be.

Some folders may be hidden. To unhide them go to the start menu and type in "Folder Options". There will be a option that will a tab that says "view". Then click the bubble next to "show hidden files and folders" and then click "apply" then "OK". Hope this helps.
