Mysterious Blue Screen crashes

Hi! I am working on a Toshiba Satellite A135, that has Vista Home Basic 32-bit installed on a 64-bit machine. Since I have installed Service Pack 2, I have gotten a BSoD on numerous occasions; actually every time I start it up. Here is the last message I got from Windows:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.2
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 1a
BCP1: 00005003
BCP2: C0402000
BCP3: 000007CF
BCP4: 002D1F01
OS Version: 6_0_6002
Service Pack: 2_0
Product: 768_1

I have been trying to find a link to find a description of the error codes, but haven't had success so far.

I am running a cooling pad under it.

Just a side note: I was able to run the computer on LinuxMint liveCD all night without a problem, so my thoughts are that the problem is not hardware-related, but more likely software (Windows).

Any ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Goalsetter,
Go to C > Windows > Minidump, zip up the files, upload them with your next post and we will take a look at them for you.
You may need to save them to your desktop first.

While your waiting, open a command prompt as administrator and type in sfc/scannow and press enter, if errors are found, you may need to run it more than once.

Also, include your system specs too, thanks.

Thanks for the reply, stoneys-nutz.

SFC found no integrity violations.

I have attached the Minidump file.

The hardware info is as follows: Satellite A135-S2386, Intel CPU T2080, @ 1.73GHz 1.73GHz, 2 GB RAM.

This is the result for your Minidump.

STOP 0x0000001A: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
Usual causes: Device driver, memory, kernel

I would start by checking the memory.
Download and run Memtest, run it overnight, or for at least six hours.
A quicker way is to remove a stick of ram and try, if all goes well try the other stick.

Update all the drivers, sound, video, and chipset.
(I will check the installed driver dates when i get a minute).

Check the memory and post the results, good luck.

I ran memtest86 from a Linux livecd all night. It ran 8 times. No errors showed up.

Windows Update had driver updates for the following devices, which I installed before I ran the memory scan:

  • Atheros Comm. Wireless adapter
  • Realtek Semiconductor NIC
  • Synaptics PS/2 Touchpad
  • Toshiba's X64 ACPI-Compliant Value Added Logical and Gen. Purpose Device (whatever that is!)
How can I learn how to decode the errors and crash codes that Windows provides?

I will let you know if it goes to a blue screen again. Thanks for your help!

One other point that may be of interest is that SpeedFan indicates the core temps are running in the 100 degree Celsius range. Doesn't that seem hot? Do you know how to cool the system down using SpeedFan or some other comparable product?
