Hi,

My Info.....Dell Inspiron 1720, purchased summer ’08, Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM, Service Pack 2, 32 bit, 4 GB ram,

I have an important address file in wks spreadsheet format that I need to open. My old computer is 1500 miles away and has MS Works on it. I'm in Florida for the winter and I do not have MSWorks on my computer here.

The properties of the file lists that it opens with Windows Shell Common. That is not installed on my computer. I can not open it with Excel or with Word.

Would love some help. Thanks, Barb

First of all what type of Office are you using? and Also when you save the workbook in Works spreadsheet please go to File > Save As and then Enter the information but change the save file type to what ever Version of Office you have (If 2010 then pick Office 2007 (.xlsx))

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Try to download the free open office
OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite

Very similar to the pay version of MS office

Hi Rich,

I have MS Office, do I still need to download OpenOffice? What do I then do?

I have a problem with my MS Office as I only have a shortcut (looks like a filefolder with arrow) on my desktop. When I click on that, I have 4 folders (Document Themes 12, Media, Office 12, and Templates).

When I click on Office 12 there are lots of things in there but I can't seem to find an application icon that would go on the desktop and open the whole she-bang. I have to open things individ. from within. I have created an Excel and a Word shortcut for desktop but would like to figure out how to have it open correctly.

Thanks,
Barb

If you already have Office, you may want to try and set up the correct associations to have it work properly.

Hi Josh,
I don't have Works on this computer so I can't open the file at all. Are you saying that I will be able to open it if I download open office, even though I can't open it with MS Office 12? What program would I use to open it in Open Office?

thanks,
Barb

Do you have the current version of Excel?
Many times (I think to make money) an older version cannot open a newer version from the same program.

Hi,

Try copying the file & then renaming it as ??????.xls, instead of the current name of ??????.wks

This should then open automatically & be converted in Excel. ONce open complete a "Save as" in Excel format.

It should be worth a try?

EDIT: -

Don't forget to show file extensions in Windows explorer.
