need help with error message

"m having some serious problems with trying to update my Norton Security. Problems include:

-It won't allow me to use a restore point

-Ran Start-up repair finds no errors

-I cannot download an update for Norton or any other program

The biggest problem is is I keep getting this message: VIRSCAN.zip. It keeps saying that the installation files are corrupt and that I need to download a fresh file. It keeps saying something about WinRAR, so I tried using 7Zip to extract it, but I still get a corrupt file message. I have tried to download other anti virus, chrome google, etc. same message. I also get CRC failed file is broken-how do i fix this!

I don't know if I'm leaving something out, but If someone could help, it would REALLY be appreciated. As you can tell I am not very technical.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

First if you can get into your desktop I would do the following.

Run A full AV.
Download and run a full scan with Malwarebytes.

Then I would run sfc.

Start menu
all programs
accessories
Right click on the command prompt.
Rum as administrator
when the command box appears type sfc /scannow and let it run until it's done.
Don't use your computer while it is running it works better. When it's done send us the report. Note there is a space between the sfc and the forward slash.

To be honest, I would get the Norton removal tool and remove it
Then download and install Microsoft Security Essentials, With that and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, Plus some good antispyware, I prefer SuperAntiSpyware, there is also SpywareBlaster, you should have no problems

In addition to the mentioned software, please look into winpatrol. It is a pseudo antivirus with a lot of additional features that can be used in many situations.

Sorry, I'm a little confused by how you worded it. Where is the CBS.log? It's only in the Command Prompt.

edit- I read the edit that you made, but when I click on CBS.log, it says that access it denied.

If your operating system is in the C drive go to computer,C,Windows,Logs,CBS,CBS.Log
Then follow the instructions given above.
Oh and you can close the command prompt window as you have finished with that.

Here's what I get when I go to that. I'm not quite sure which is the CBS.log. It also says access denied when I click on them, with the exception of FilterList. I appreciate your patience.

Download DDS from one of these links:

Mirror 1 Mirror 2 Mirror 3
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click the dds icon to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt <--this will be minimized in the task tray
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
Include the contents of both logs in your new topic.
The scan will instruct you to post Attach.txt as an attachment.

On the next post click on the paperclip icon and browse to the saved files and click upload. When it has finished it will say done at the bottom. You can then close the box

Here. I don't know if this means anything. It's the DDS logs.

*also* I don't know if this is related, but Vista restore points don't work either. I tried loading to a restore point from about a month ago, and I wasn't able to.
