Can you help at all with the printer sharing? I have the printer installed on another computer (running Vista Home Basic) and it works fine, but it won't let me share the printer. I press to turn it on and it turns itself right back off. I just need the printer to work somehow!! Right now, I'd like to just throw this computer out in the middle of the highway it has me so frustrated.

My Computer

I'll be watchin the news now for the headlines: "Highway closed due to Computers"

Anyway, I Found this on a google search:

I had the same problem. Here's what I did:

1. Run services.msc

2. Turn on SSDP and UPnP Device Host

3. Go back to Network/Sharing Center and click on "On" on Network Discovery and hit "Apply"

4. This time it should stay "On"

Post again and click on the paper clip near the smiley above. Browse to C:\Windows and find the Windowsupdate.log file and upload it.

The log says there's a problem with digital signatures for some of the downloads and aborts the download/installation.

Go here- Windows update error code 80096001 - Microsoft Answers

You can try the fix-it method first. If that doesn't work, try the second fix. Note the corrections some of the people have noted early on in the thread.

Witrher, I posted that above. She has posted the error number earlier.

Swen, I think you may really just want to back up your documents and redo the Vista instalation.

I saw your link to fix-it but didn't see anything about creating the batch file and running it to correct the permissions that's in the link I provided. It's a long thread.

I did actually try these steps and they didn't work. I can't get the fixit program to install so i had to do it all manually. I think I am just going to start fresh and hope that takes care of it. Any pointers on saving everything on my harddrive. Will cloning my drive save my programs so that I can take them off there or do I need to reinstall them all. Thanks for your help!

Yuo need to reinstall unfortunately.

Did you try creating the batch file in the link I provided and running it? It's just a trusted site issue and it seems to me that it can be overcome without doing a reinstall. I know most of the other people in here read many of the problems but maybe the right one isn't reading this thread. You might try posting the update problem in the update subforum and see if someone else picks on a possible fix.

The trouble with cloning your drive is that you're going to do a fresh install. When you restore the clone, you're restoring the existing problems.

I don't know how many personal files you have but you can buy programs like Backitup to do file backups or look at using the Windows backup feature for free.

I am beginning to think that there are more problems than that. I don't know that the trusted site issue would be causing my printer not to work. If so, why just that one? Also, now my pdf995 doesn't work (tells me it can't open printer) and that was working and my Kodak printer keeps having spooler issues. I think I can replace most of the programs that I have. I have a ton of embroidery files, pictures and music, etc. I just don't know what else to do to get Windows back to normal.

My Computer

I probably used the wrong term when I said trusted site but it goes hand in hand with the signature problem. I don't know why there would be a problem with a download from a microsoft website. The batch file in the link I provided fixed the update problem for at least two people. Without all the updates, you won't continue to get security updates from Microsoft.

You previously said that your printer is shown as ready in the Control Panel. Is it selected as the default?

Which program are you using to print out your embroidery files? If you go to the print options for that program, which printer does it show?

The spooler problem is another issue. You have to describe that in detail.

I am missing some .dll files (initpki.dll; gpkcsp.dll; sccbase.dll; slbcsp.dll) In that thread it has you do something with some .dll files and these ones are missing from my computer.

I do have it set as default. I have tried everything with it and get no luck. I haven't printed out any embroidery files since this began. I have tried but get an error and it does show the oki printer since i had that on default.

The spooler message just said the spool manager had encountered an unknown error, would I like to look for help on this problem. I click yes, as that was recommended, but it does nothing when I click on it.

My Computer

I didn't see any reference to .dll files in the thread, proper. However, I didn't run that batch file.

All the files you mentioned are part of Internet Explorer. Maybe you need to reinstall it.

Okay - I have an update - I decided to retry a few things that had been suggested, including the batch file. This time, the batch file processed and worked for the most part. I did have a couple things fail. But, I got Windows update to work and all updates are installed and SP2 is also installed. Bad news - no luck with the printer problem? Any further suggestions on the error 0x00000057 that I am getting from this?

Thank you so much for the help that you have already given me. It gives me hope that maybe my printer installation will get worked out.

My Computer

One down.

Go to C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository and check for a Oki folder. Is there one there? Does it have anything in it?

Right click on the folder, if it's there, and select properties\Security. Does the System have full permissions (except special permissions)? Does Everyone have the read & execute, List, Read permissions?

Also, maybe you can now download Fix-It and run the printer checks.

I have checked all that and it is fine. I ran the fix-it last night and it says there is nothing wrong. I did back up all my files, etc and make a list of all installed programs, so if need be I can do a system recovery.

I think you need to wipe n go.

I'm certain the virus/spyware you had has muckd ALOT up
