I can't open any of the files that I have downloaded from the tutorial pages. In the instruction it states to save to desktop, right click, select merge. I do not have that option in the drop down menu. It asks which program to open it with and I cant find one that will open it. Please help!

Hello J4str, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Do they have the .reg file extension on them still, and didn't get renamed by some sort of security program or browser add-on?

If it does, then double check in Default Programs to make sure that the .reg file extension is set to have it's "Current Default" program as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, see if you have the Merge option available.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks Brink, C:\Windows\regedit.exe was the ticket to opening them. I had to add it to the search portion because it wasn't in the default programs selection. I still do not have the option to merge though!? When I open them the UAC pops up, I select OK them an other widow pops up with registry editor warning, I select OK, Then a new window pops up that the registry value has been added to the registry. After this nothing else pops up.

That's normal. You can either open (like you did) or right click on .reg file and click on Merge, to merge the .reg file. :)

So... how do I launch the programs? Do they fix the the settings automatically? By the way I downloaded Reset_Folder_View.reg and vistazip.reg. Do I need to restart my computer for the changes to take effect?

A .reg file is not a program, it's just a file that makes changes to your registry that will affect Vista for what the tutorial was for.

I'm assuming that you are using the Reset_Folder_View.reg download in option one of METHOD TWO of the tutorial below. After doing so, you would just need to follow step 8 to do the rest of the steps starting at step 29 to finish.

Could you post the tutorial link for the vistazip.reg file?
