Wonderful! I love the way this thread has turned me from a writer into an author, and now into a personal entertainer! :sarc:

I am sure the turkey will be thrilled that you have chosen not to eat him!

Fingers crossed for the standalones!

Didn't say I wouldn't eat the bird...

So far 3 packages downloaded and installed OK...
When do we try .net4?

Do all of the rest of those if you can find the links. Number any KBs here which you can't find the link for. You sometimes have to go into the IT Pros section. Finish them all off. Then do .net 4, then SP2.

Best of luck!

Richard

Stumbled again Richard - three of the standalones would not install or only partially install. I've repeated the log exercise and have attached it as before. I noticed there still seem to be corruptions that the first part of the exercise said it could not fix.
Can I ask what I'm sure will be a dumb question. If IE is the root of the problem why not get rid of it? (I use Chrome or Firefox) and since I'm after .net 4 why not get rid of 3.5?

Hi jonmal123,

First, you may be able to uninstall IE8, but it will revert to IE7 and that cannot be uninstalled as it is built into the operating system. Even if you re-install Vista, you can't exclude IE (there's no option to avoid the installation). I suppose it's possible that IE7 would not have the problems of IE8, but I'd rather let Richard address that.

Second, .NET Framework updates are not like updates to Office. The newest update does not always replace everything in the older ones and some programs and features depend on the older ones to work and will not function if they are removed (even if you then install .NET 4). I'm not completely sure what would be affected by removing 3.5 (and I'm not 100% this is true for 3.5, but it certainly is for other .NET Framework versions on your system), but I suspect it would be something (either required now or perhaps needed later).

I'm sure he'll be back to assist you as soon as possible. I thought I'd try to address your questions in the meantime.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Right, a few things to say. I am changing the priority slightly at the moment. We will try and get your Garmin working, and then come back to Windows Update slightly.

The good news:

SURT did not report any errors! Don't worry about CheckSUR.persist.log. That just shows all of the logs. If there are no errors in CheckSUR.log, then no errors were detected. Which there weren't. Our fix has held, and no more damage has been done.

Your system will never get a clean result from SFC - ever. However, this is not always something to worry about. settings.ini will always show as a corruption. As said by Microsoft, and not just me, settings.ini is not a true corruption, and will not affect anything. I wish Microsoft would just white list it, as I am always typing this! The SFC.exe command reports Settings.ini file errors in the CBS.log file after you add gadgets to the Windows Vista Sidebar by using the Sysprep tool and an Autounattend.xml file

However, sadly, settings.ini was not the only thing detected. Look below:

This is rather interesting. It hasn't accepted one of the replaced files. Just one. Usually it works fine. I also think that it is very unlikely that I have mixed any up. Just sometimes it doesn't bite first time. It could also be something to do with it being the in-use version.

It also does not like mscorsvw.exe. This is not a file I have seen mentioned before. We can try another fix on those two at a later date.

It is curious that some worked.

Right, back to Garmin.

As Lorien has very correctly pointed out, IE can be ignored, but it cannot be removed. It also deals with all of the system wide proxys and internet, and is therefore pretty crucial. It is just too built in.

Also as said by Lorien (I am just reiterating) other programs will/may (and I go for will) need .net 3.5. They are also very separate. An issue with them all is actually an issue with Windows. An issue with one is just an issue with that.

Download and install .net 4 from here: Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer)

If it fails or succeeds, plough/plow on and try to install Garmin again. If Garmin still fails, I quote an earlier post. I know you tried it then, but things have moved on since then.

[DEL]All we need to do at the very present is get .net 4 on. .net Framework error are almost ALWAYS fixed with a re-install. Hopefully you won't be the exception! [/DEL]Download and run this tool: .NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide - Aaron Stebner's WebLog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Make sure that you ONLY cleanup .net Framework 4. Then download and install this package: Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer)

[DEL]If this doesn't work, try the advice by Lorien.

Thanks!

Richard[/DEL]

Thanks, and good luck!

Richard

Thanks for that - It'll save Richard from my non-tech nonsense! I thought there had to be a good reason as otherwise life would be simple and linear...

Yeeha! Well it looks like you have Richard ".Net 4 Installation Completed"
Now should I risk SP2? or leave the beast alone now that it's working...

Get Garmin installed, and then try SP2. Hopefully SP2 will include some of those problem KBs. However, may I suggest that you try SP2 from here: Download details: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone (KB948465)

Once SP2 has been a success (it will be, won't it! Hopefully) then try Windows Update again, and check for updates. Hopefully they will all install. If you still have problems, after installing all of the rest, then come back here.

Two points:

I ask you to do SP2 because it improves stability, and patches security vulnerabilities. Without it, your PC is open to infections and malicious attack.

Remember that if one update fails, the whole group fails, so before telling me that a hundred updates have failed, try them in smaller and smaller groups, trying to find the problem updates.

Thanks!

Richard

I am so happy! That is such good news! I am so glad all is well! It has been an absolute pleasure working with you! I can honestly say that this is my favourite thread in a long time. I am sorry it dragged on a bit, but we broke through in the end! Thank you for the +rep, and enjoy your computer! Oh, and recommend this forum to your friends, if you will, as we get bored sitting on the refresh button waiting for something to happen!

Anyway, good night!
