Solved .Net framework problem

Greetings. Windows Media Center will not start. The error states that there is no .Net Framework install root in the registry. Both 3.5 SP2 and 4.0 were installed at the time. Per forum recommendations, I removed and re-installed both. Error still occurs. I purchased and ran registry booster; it found and fixed a bunch of problems. Error still occurs. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello dglawton and welcome to the forums

Can you follow these steps for me please?

1. Open the start menu
2. In the search box, type cmd
3. Right click on command prompt and select run as administrator
4. In command prompt, type:

sfc /scannow

Let it run, it should take about 10-15 minutes. This will check the integrity of your system files and will attempt to replace or repair corrupted or missing files.

Repeat this process 3 times (sometimes it isn't fixed on the first time), and if it is still detecting problems ("Integrity Violations"), then let me know and we will try something else.

Thanks for your quick reply Tom.

I ran the recommended app three times re-booting between each. Each ran to completion with the following output

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.0.6002]
Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc/scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

C:\Windows\system32>

When starting WMC I still get a message box titled

ehshell.exe - .Net Framework Initialization Error

with the message

Please set the registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.Netframework\InstallRoot to point to the .NET Framework install location

There are plenty of keys in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework but no Installroot.

Thanks again for the procedure. Any other ideas?

Can you download and install CCleaner:

CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Run the cleaner, and the registry cleaner

BACK UP THE REGISTRY WHEN PROMPTED

Then reboot, and let me know if this has any effect.

Also, do you have the latest updates installed?

And how recent is this problem?

Hello Don,

According the .NET Expert Aaron Stebner if .NET is corrupted the only way to fix it is to run a Repair to your OS. How to repair the .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 on Windows Vista - Aaron Stebner's WebLog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs follow this article to run a Repair http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

Hope this helps,
