Network Issues

I am currently running Vista home on my main PC. I have a router plugged into it.

The router is working fine (my son's laptop accesses wirelessly, and I am able to hit the net using a virtual PC that I have set up on it.)

However, my main computer is not recognizing the router and is returning an APIPA address when I run ipconfig.

I have tried to ping the router but am not able to hit it.

I have replaced the cable (even though I do not think that is the issue as I am able to access via the virtual PC).

I am unable to restore any connection.

Any ideas?

Try powering down for 30 secs and restart to see if network connection is automaticlly detected upon power up.
The past couple of days I had problems connecting to Yahoo using Explorer on my computer, daughters would connect fine, the connection would resume on power up and then be lost upon later attempts to connect. After connecting I started to go thru Internet icons on toolbar. Under the Manage Add-ons I started disabling Addons one by one. Router leds would show activity while attempting to connect, something was blocking it.
Found one titled "Research" that when disabled it allowed me to go on with business as usual. Unable to determine exactly which Research it is when I do a google search.
Manage Add-ons is the one on the toolbar that looks like it is a piece of puzzle on a sheet of white paper. Try disableing add ons one by one and try reconnecting to internet after each attempt.

I've tried the power cycle (computer, router, etc.).

No good.

Also, unable to ping the router through the wire connection. Have changed wires with no success, and what bothers me is that I'm able to connect through my virtual PC's that are using said connection.

I have been able to put a wireless USB connection up, and that seems to be working fine.

Since you have the wireless, use it for now. AT some point I would try to borrow a replacement router and try it. It is an electronic device, and they do go bad.
Not a expert on troubleshooting routers, but, The virtual still working, gets me; that must mean that a port setting got changed on the computer some how. How often and good is your antivirus?

Hopefully we can get another, more knowledgable party involved.

This one has me stumped as well.

I'm using Microsoft Defender.

Not certain just exactly what happened. My wife was up on it last night and it just quit.

Have gone into different ports on the back of the router (it has 4 ports for wired connections as well as the wireless).

I'm going to hit my instructors up Tuesday night as well, see if they have any ideas.

If it works in a virtual machine but not the actual OS installed that right there leads me to believe there is something on the machine itself blocking it.

- Make sure that the adapter your using is set to automagically assign an IP, do not assign it an address.

- Make sure all drivers -- especially the network adapter drivers -- are up to date and functioning

- Open up a command prompt -> type ipconfig /renew -> post the results

- Run a virus scan just to double check that the system is clean

I ran the IPconfig /renew and it remained as it was. I'll run the virus check and post the results.

I'm in agreement that it sounds like something on the machine/os. (What's real puzzling is the fact that I can get up wireless, thus leading me to believe it may be a driver issue.)

Did you try to update a driver, and then you were unable to connect or are you saying that it just quite working on it's own?
Curious because unless you were trying to update something the driver should not quite working on it's own, it was connecting, then all of a sudden for no reason quite; it is simply data.

No updates. It just stopped on it's own, at least as I understand it from my wife who was up when it happened.

I also checked for updates for the driver and there are none, so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Did you check from the OS or from the manufacture website?

Ok, perfect. Most of the time, in fact probably 99% of the time windows is clueless about that stuff.

Yeah, well, the trend continues. I couldn't find anything on the site. Did manage to d/l a program to check the system to ensure the setting for the equipment are ok, but it came up clean as well.

Checked the f/w once, but think I'll go back in there and check once more. May be something I missed on first glance.

Personally, I'm leaning more & more to the router. Drivers are simply data instructions. It was working and quite connecting and transmitting information to the internet on it's own. Since apparantly there were no changes, by virture of no updating attempts, (therefore no change could occur) it is my feeling that something internal to the physical wired ports became damaged/ the only other explanation (not likely tho) was a change at the server location. This I don't feel is correct because you are able to use the wireless side of the router. As far as the virtual, that you got me on. Since routers are not really that expensive, Considering, I would buy a new one or perhaps borrow one from some one to try, or just continue to use the wireless, your choice.

The only other thing that I can think of is the actual connectors where the cord plugs into the ports on the back of the computer or router, maybe one of the prongs got bent somehow.
