Solved [New Wide Screen Monitor] Problem

Whine - no this game isn't wide screen happy
Not 3-D
I'm on Native Resolution now, I have tried all stops from 800X60 to Native 1366X7680, no real screen change is visible [just some distortion]

Could I have a bad graphics card?
Remeber, my old monitor was just fine, then just started flashing on and off [mostly black screen, withpulses]

My monitor will also stretch out the screen if I don't use the native resolution causing distortion. I think that is what is going on with you. That's the problem with wide screen monitors and full frame games-more than likely it will be stretched causing distortion when it goes into full screen mode.

It looks like Newegg still has some full frame monitors: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subcategory=20&Description=&Type=&N=100007617&IsNodeId=1&srchInDesc=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&PropertyCodeValue=3019%3A22115

The 3 I checked where all 1280x1024 which is close to full frame.

usually when a program doesn't accept full screen, the video card will change the aspect ratio so the program is shown in something like 4:3 but within the borders of the screen. I ran into a variant of this when I had a couple of 8800 GTs. I installed the latest driver and still had the same monitor but one game showed on screen as 4:3 and didn't take up the entire space. I didn't like it so I rolled back the driver.

I was asking about 3D since the NVIDIA control panel has a setting regarding whether the program should decide or NVIDIA should decide in regards to image settings.

does this game happen to use 8 bit or 16 bit resolution?

Well the aspect ratio might change but the monitor might be set to automatically stretch the screen out so that it fills the screen hence the distortion. Mine does that and I have found no way to change it.

That's interesting. I just bought a new 24" HD 16:9 monitor and haven't encountered any distortion. Everything I have, software wise, either fills the screen or doesn't fill the screen, usually horizontally. It has an automatic image adjustment that I can't change but it does have image adjustment which allows you to change things like the horizontal size, image position and aspect ratio. I don't know how the graphics card interacts with that.

Since the problem is solved, as I understand it, except for one game, I don't think it's a monitor problem.

Well I suppose so except that the monitor is automatically stretching full frame resolutions across the entire screen. If there isn't a setting to turn that off then the OP can't really do anything about it.

A person might be able to eliminate the distortion problem by changing the dpi. However, that's going to affect all software, either in a good or bad way.

Yard Dog
My buttons are on the side, but yeah, did try them, no joy

wither 3
In NVIDIA Control Panel, mine has Adjust Desktop Size and Position, and the 2 tabs are Scaling and Position, but neither made a REAL difference [mostly the screen display icon in the tab was changed, but the Apply button made no change to the actual display.
The only Help is the Help menu at top. Nothing about overscan
I did a search for 'overscan' and found 2 listings, both refer to a resizing tab.

Apparently I am working with VGA (with EDID), which allows only Scaling, not Resizing.

If it is reported that you are working on VGA then it is not a monitor problem.
The flashing can be caused by an incorrect signal being sent to the monitor rather than a monitor error.

Look into device manager, if VGA is still listed instead of the graphics card try re-seating it.
Delete the vga driver then restart the computer.
If your device driver still shows vga try manually updating the driver to the one of your graphics card.

Ensure that your nvidia control panel is up to date and full screen is set in the Adjust destop size and position tab. (the VGA option may not allow this as you have said).

Pleasse report your findings.

Thanks for the info guys, it is appreciated.

Couldn't tell you what the bit rates is, guess I could give it a try on a lower rate [I'm at 32], but I already ordered a 4:3 from NewEgg.

On a side note, I rotated the screen and set it on its side and got a full image of the game [of course with a 9:16 distorsion - lol].

I appreciate all the thought you all put into my problem.

The 3 monitors I saw on New Egg have an aspect ratio of 1.25 which is close to 4:3 so it'll be crunch in some but not much. The resolution on the monitors I did look at is 1280x1024. As a comparison a 4:3 resolution would be 1280x960 which is only 64 pixels off. You should hardly notice the difference especially after going from a wide screen monitor.

I mentioned the bit rates because the NVIDIA control panel has a box you can check to show 8 bit and 16 bit resolutions. It's still a pain to have to set the resolution every time you want to use a particular piece of software. There's got to be a different solution. I don't know the name of the software that's the problem but, if it's legacy software, maybe it has to be run in a compatibility mode. We'll have to see how the new monitor works out. 1280x... is sort of archaic in todays electronics world.
