Hi,

There is a workaround for this which involves setting some options in the HD control panel. To get to these options, click the start orb, 'Control Panel' and 'Additional Options'. Next, click 'Realtek HD Audio Manager'. This should open as shown in the image below. Select 'Speakers' and 'Speaker Configuration' if not already selected. In 'Speaker Configuration', select '5.1 Speaker'.
attachment.php

This shows the default 5.1 setup.

To change it to a 2.1 setup, you need to deselect the 'Optional Speakers' as shown above. The signals will then be fed as follows:
Rear Left > Front Left
Rear Right > Front Right
Center > Balanced between Front Left and Front Right
The Subwoofer will behave as normal.

Hi cubish and welcome to Vista Forums

Have you actually installed the Realtek driver? Although Vista natively supports Realtek HD audio (at least, Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP1 does), it is only a basic driver. For full functionality, you need the driver from the Realtek site. Before you do so, what are your system specs, and are you running 32-bit or 64-bit? In particular, we need the make and model number of your motherboard as this will determine whether you want the HD or AC'97 driver (or a driver from a different manufacturer).

Thanks for the advice so far, I appear to have the latest drive provided for Audio for my ASUS P5Q Pro motherboard and have followed the instrutions in this thread to setup in 5.1 mode and get 2.1.

When I play music the suwoofer appears to be working, but I am not sure whether everything is working optimally.

When I do a test using the test button beside "Speaker Configuration" all the speakers create sound but the subwoofer, is this a problem considering the subwoofer is creating sound when playing music?

Also, I am a bit confused on the best way to hookup my speakers to the computer. I have Logitech Z4 2.1 speakers but my motherboard has a lot of 5.1 related outputs and also a digital S/PDIF output ... I was told by logitech just to plug the single connector into the "green" connector on the computer (which is either headphones or Front Speaker Out).

Am I getting full use of my speaks using this setup or can I use S/PDIF out and some sort of conversion cable for it to work better?

Thanks for any advice.

if its 2.1 you won't hear it in the test since its 2.1 the sub will play though.......

This comes up as one of the top searches for this issue with no subwoofer and 2.1 problems. I went threw around 6 hours of research to finally getting this to work, So I figured I would join a share my findings on how to fix this issue.

Using 2.1 on Realtek HD Audio driver:

First thing you want to do is visit:
http://www.realtek.com/downloads/

Download the most up to date Realtek HD Audio Driver from them.

The solution To Proper 2.1(or at least working):
