Sounds like it is hardware, Unless you dropped the computer or something, I would guess its the sound card.
I cannot, be sure however.

This computer don't have a sound card.....it's itegreted audio, so I guess i'll have to talk to Dell.

I might end up having to install a sound card. If it comes to that, are there any good cards that are compatible with Vista that might work in a Dell computer.

Windows is looking for the latest Windows driver. More than likely, your mobo has a Dell driver.

If you don't have any driver discs that came with this system, go here-

Product Support for XPS 420 | Dell US

and run the Dell PC diagnostics.

If it doesn't find anything, go to the drivers section and download\install the audio driver- Drivers & Downloads | Dell US

Finally had enough of this problem yesterday and called Dell Tech Support and was willing to pay them to figure it out. They took control of the computer and I watched as they redid everything you guys already had me do, plus a few other tricks (including the Dell audio driver). They finally came to the conclusion that I have a hardware problem.......probably a faulty sound card....or in this case a faulty plug-in sound chip on the computer's mother board. Woe is me. Well, at least I didn't have to pay those guys anthing (because they didn't fix the problem). So I guess I'll be hauling my tower off to Best Buy or some other computer repair store.

You guys are not going to believe this……..

I'm remodeling our computer room with new insulation and drywall. I already had everything done and waiting on a drywall finisher. The electric outlet box behind the computer came apart. It's one of those 2 piece outlet boxes and it came apart in half, and the half with the outlet screwed into it was the loose part (with no way to keep it from pulling right out of the wall). So this afternoon I took down the piece of dry wall around the receptacle and removed it and the bad outlet box. When I got it all put back together again and plugged the computer back into the outlet.......guess what happened.........

You guessed it.....the audio came back!! Believe that? Two days of troubleshooting ...and all I had to do was cycle the power.

Thought I’d let you all know how the problem was resolved….just in case someone else shows up with the same problem.

Again….thanks for helping
