Yes, you are correct. It is a PDF file, as symbolized by the .pdf extension to the file name. This is opened by the Adobe Reader (link given below to latest version).

Hi Amplid,

Whilst waiting for your next reply, I have had a quick look through the manual. Although the diagram of the motherboard wasn't as detailed as in some other manuals, it is still very useful in pinpointing where connections to various peripheral components are made. From this, I can see that the front panel audio connectors are situated in the bottom left of the motherboard (page 12 of the manual). It is possible that, because of their position, the wires going to that connector may need to be carefully rerouted slightly so that they are better able to reach them without being over stretched (see page 25 for details of the pin assignments for this connector). If you have a couple of spare jumpers, you can test to see whether or not this is the source of your problem. Disconnect ALL wires from this socket. Next, using the jumpers, bridge the following terminals: 5 & 6 and 9 & 10 (as also explained on page 25). Reboot your PC and check the sound quality. If this has improved, then this could be the source of the problem. Shut down your PC and reconnect the wires to this connector. Reboot and check again. If the problem returns, then it could be a fault in the front panel sockets or the wiring to same. If you can manage without these sockets, then simply replace the jumpers as detailed earlier. If, however, you need these sockets then you can buy units which fit into either a spare 3.5 or 5 inch drive bay and which provide a multitude of sockets such as audio, USB and firewire. Some even come with in-built card readers as well. Note that in order to carry out the procedures in this post, I recommend that you print out the relevant pages of the manual, i.e. pages 12 & 25 so that you can refer to them. Hey Dwarf, I've just finished checking everything subscribed in the manual and it still hasn't changed. By lack of experience and not wanting to mess it up further, I am just going to my pc shop tomorrow to hand in my pc. Sorry to hear that nothing has worked for you. Please reply when you have found the cause of the problem. It may be something trivial, in which case we will probably be kicking ourselves, or it may be something more serious such as a faulty motherboard. Either way, it would be interesting see what the cause was.

Hey Dwarf, I went to the pc shop and I'm bringing in my pc on wednesday. I have explained him everything and told him about what I (=we) have tried already and he thinks it is probably a failure in the sound card. In that case, do you have any tips for a new sound card? Nothing to special, but it needs 5.1.

Are you currently using a sound card in your PC or is it the on-board audio? If it is a sound card, try removing it and reseating it in its slot. Alternatively, try a different slot if you have a suitable one available. Let me know how you get on with this. In the meantime, I will see what I can find as regards compatible sound cards for you.

Hi Amplid,

Thanks for the reply - just wanted to clarify this point. Be aware that, if your audio processor on your motherboard has failed, it is also possible that other items on the board may also fail or be failing. As regards sound cards, the manufacturer that I recommend is Creative. They have a comprehensive range available, from high performance units for musicians and serious gamers right through to plug-in USB devices for those who want a quick and easy audio solution. I provide a link to the English language version of the Belgian section of the Creative website. They produce the well-known and renowned SoundBlaster series of sound cards, as well as others. You may wish to browse through this site for suitable cards for your needs, and also to check that drivers are available. If you do decide to opt for one of these cards, it can, of course, be used with a new motherboard should you decide at a later date to upgrade your system.

Hey guys, just thought you'd like to know that my new Creative Soundblaster Audigy card has been installed just now and I'm thrilled that I am FINALLY getting sound out of my pc again!! Haha I'm driving my parents crazy in here:d
The problem was that my soundcard was simply broken so you guys probably couldn't have done anything about it, but thanks again to everyone who has tried!
