Nvidia is getting ready to quit the chipset business. What this means, is that SLI and SLI motherboards will become a thing of the past, and will for lack of better terminology be collectors items.

It doesn't help matters all the problems, that they have with their 680i chipsets, 780i chipsets and so on, and now all the problems with their 8500 and 8600 graphics chips, and recall that is in brewing stages.

However, Nvidia has responded to the news by saying its completely groundless. The company stated that it has no intention of getting out of the chipset business, according to Michael Jong, senior director of corporate marketing for Nvidia APAC.

Jong added that Nvidia is looking forward to bringing new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms.

I'll believe it only when they say it for themselves.

Something doesn't smell right to me either now that I think about it. Why would they up and quit the chipset business, when they have a chance to sell Intel a load of MCP 200 chips to enable SLI on the upcoming Intel X58 chipset.

Also recentl Nvidia says they're not leaving the chipset business, according to the following PCMAG posting.

Case and point, there were rumors about what chip ASUS used in their soundcards last year, until Digit Times reported that ASUS was using the CMEDIA 8788HD chip, people didn't believe it then that ASUS was, and then this year Auzentech confirmed that they themselves couldn't get anymore 8788HD chips, as ASUS now has exclusive rights to the chips.

If Nvidia isn't exiting the chipset business, then why I ask are motherboard manufacturers, including Gigabyte pulling Nvidia chipset motherboards from the market.

I agree, both company's need to get there act together and get real about the chipset problems they both have Neither Company's care about the chipset issues either and left millions in the dark...Just look at the NF nvidia series, VIA chipsets and Vista.. Both companys just left hundreds of bugs, made no attempt at making "working" supported drivers and moved on

I'm in agreement with you there. I had so much trouble with that ASUS P5N32-E SLI motherboard I had, that back in March, I said enough was enough, and bailed out and got my 975XBX2, which hasn't given me one ounce of trouble. Then a month later I bailed out of the last 640MB 8800 GTS that I had and got my Radeon 3870X2, which doesn't give me any trouble now, that I have a 6 pin PCI Express to 8 pin PCI Express power adapter cable in place.

At the time I got my Radeon 3870X2, I also got me a 30GB Microsoft Zune MP3 Player.

I remember SLI with Voodoo 2 cards. The Voodoo 6 was supposed to be incredible. It lasted long enough on paper to see a spec sheet. Never made it to production. With the 4870x2 coming out. Do you need SLI?

Update: NVIDIA says the rumors are groundless and that its chipset business is as "strong as it ever has been," and that the 790i chipset is still being made. That's that, we suppose -- but until NVIDIA comes right out and explains what's going on, these types of rumors aren't going away.

dude beats me. Im just adding info on the subject. Last I heard im not the CEO of nvidia.

Interestingly enough, I ain't having squat for problems with mine until I start heavy over clocking - and part of my problem is that, though I have a bad CPU for OCing, I have a really good, solid and stable setup otherwise.

Then again, eVGA ain't pulling their 790s, so I am guessing eVGA is doing something right? As in following the reference spec like it was designed by nVidia?

I've never had any problems with Nvidia since I started using their stuff when the Geforce 2 came out *shrug*

SLI has been a confounded nuisance and its only realistic use is for people lacking any conveniently sited black holes, has been a way to throw money into it and see it disappear and the same goes for Crossfire............

maybe if youre a "3dMark' overclocker' freak" then yea.. or else if you're an "normal" PC user, i dont see how NForce are buggy!

Your saying using AGP at 8x is better than using SLI at 32x and higher??? SLI is the fastst CPU-GPU link available to date...I think it has its purpuse especially for gaming and multimedia work

SLI is a great way to buy a kick ass graphics card now, and then 2 years later buy the same card at a much cheaper price and SLI them and get the same, if not better, performance, from a single new card. I could easily grab a second 8800 GTS and SLI them and have gobs of power - but that GT 260 is calling my name....

Nvidia knew that their only advantage to sell their chipset that SLI techonology.

But now Intel Said that they will not give Nvidia License for New Generation of their processor

Nehalem if they will not give them SLI license.

That why nvidia had to give intel SLI license.

And the biggest problem that motherboard vendors now knew that nvida don't have something special so they will not make motherboards with nvidia chipset.
