OS - what are the difference's

I'm looking to get a new OS w/new build. What is/are the difference's between upgrade, OEM and just English DVD? The prices are as follows; upgrade = $219, OEM = $199, English DVD = $319 and are from Tiger direct. This is for the Ultimate OS and some prices are reflecting sales and rebates.

I understand the upgrade is overlaying new OS over the old OS but the other two confuse me. So with a new build what would be best?

Windows 7 would be best.

OEM is supposed to be used on a pc that is sold on. It must remain on that pc.

Upgrade is supposed to be used on a pc that already has a qualifying version of Windows installed. It is not necesaary to perform an in -place install - you can clean install.

The Full Retail version requires no qualifying version , and can be moved to a different pc, but must be removed form the first if you do.

Depends what deal you can get.

Students ( those with an .ac or .sch email address - may be different email address in your country ) can get 7 Professional Upgrade for $30 or £30 in UK.

There is no problem doing a clean install with the upgrade version.

For your situation (new build), I would go with the OEM if you plan to keep that OS with that system. If you sell the whole thing to your wife for $1, than you are even within the rules of the EULA as a system builder.

OEM is a lot cheaper - nearly half the price of a retail. Compare those here:

Main disadvantage of an OEM is that you cannot move it to another system.
