overclocking graphics card question!

When someone says they have the graphics card clocked at something good for the sake of the argument say there original core clock was 600 mhz then they got it to 700mhz stable. Would everyone who had the same card be able to get it stable at 700mhz (for the sake of the argument) or are there variables which depend how high or low u can get the clock!? thanks ill explain again if u dont understand!

um i think there are variables on it.... one reason ATI is better gpu you get higher overclocks ;) like the 4890 can get is core to over 1ghz

it varies from card to card even the same card from the same vendor can vary in how they oc , certain manufacturers will "cherry pick" cores and fit high quality ram to their boards as well as high quality capacitors etc and they up the voltage in the cards bios and fit better cooling , these are usually the factory overclocked models which you pay a premium for , overclocking these any further is usually difficult , sometimes if your very lucky you may end up with a cheap "base" model gpu that clocks very well but as they usually have cheaper lower quality components / ram they are also hard to get a decent oc on without a volt mod

generly speaking unless you can get get a good oc on the cards ram (higher bandwidth) its not worth overclocking its alot of hard work for 2 or 3 fps , people normaly oc for higher benchmark scores , ingame the differance is usually very small

+1

It also adds to the temps which forces you to run the fan speed higher (if set manually)

As Archie says, it's luck of the draw as to how well you can overclock a card.

your running at 1440x900 that card will eat anything you throw at it for breakfast at that resolution , dont overclock the card mate its not worth it , when you get a new monitor and a bit more time we can go into the ins and outs of overclocking properly , benchmarking properly and using apps like riva tuner to set up custom fan profiles so your card doesnt get too hot , at the moment its not worthe the work ;)

At that resolution your using, your CPU will be holding you back in some games, hence the reason for minimal/major FPS changes.

However, some games are simply more CPU intensive than others, regardless of your resolution.

yep its not very often i will blame cpu bottlenecking but thats exactly whats happening there mate , at that res your cpu is holding your card back , its a shame you cant bump up the res that card will really come into its own :)

that said running crysis and far cry at those fps your getting isnt too shabby is it :D

yeah :) Cheers guys i ran furmark (lol sorry archie could not resist overclocking a bit :o)
Anyway i found that the shader domain clock would not go up well furmark crashed with it only at 1450 so i just kept it down at 1404 (default) (any explanation)

Clocks are now 723/1404/1257

Is this a good (or normal) furmark score attached!

Just incase no one nos its a asus engtx 275!
