Solved Pci e 1-16

HI, Can I put a PCI Express 1x sound card into my spare PCI Express 16x slot( this would be used for SLI but I only have 1 graphics card)
Problem is my graphics card 9800GTX+ card takes up 2 slots and covers my PCI E 1x slot.

Giver, its just fine. Infact witha slot extender, you can run a gpu inb a 1x.

Oin a side note, with todays gpus, using xfire/sli its a 3-8fps drop from x16/x16 -> x4/x4

You can put a gpu in a x1 slot but I wouldn't. The X16 slot is specifically designed for gpu's and are therefore connected to the faster end of the chip set.

You can do what every you want, but no pci-e slot, be it x1/x4/x8 or x16 is designed for anything specific. The x1 slot is for any device with a lower bandwidth. Toss a slot expander and it works just fine, even allows for extra screens if really needed

So far, i believe tri-gtx 590 actually saturate a x16 slots bandwidth, so most cards are barely even coming close. Hence why x4/x4 and x16/x16 results in a 10fps drop.. btw thats in a setup pushing 80-100fps.
