Hi guys, This might sound like a silly questions but dont burn the newbie to Vista!
I have just set up my two Vista systems and would like to know what the rest of you get as far as your CPU and RAM% are concerned.

On my small Benq joybook it hovers at 55%cpu and 50%ram.

On my Dragon it hovers at 2%cpu and 55% ram at idle.

Any help and info would be great. Ide like to try and reduce the cpu on the Benq obviously as well as the ram on both machines.

Both machine are quite fresh, not really loaded with software. Running N360 on both machines.

Look forward to some help and ideas.

thank you.

can you tell us how much ram you have on both systems and what cpu's your running too?

for the benq you might want to look at what apps are running to take up that much of your cpu at idle as well as the ram. in task manager

for your dragon same thing and are you running dream scene? that chews ram with that on my ram hovers at 50% off it goes to around 30%

...thanks for the reply mate. On the Benq im funning the Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66ghz and 1.5gig ram on the Dragon Intel Extreme X9000 with 4gig ram.

Not running Dream /scene and yes mines about 30% also.

Vista operates best with at least 2GB RAM. I have 4GB in my machine and it idles around 0% or 1% CPU with Quad Core and about 21% on RAM.

you should add ram to the benQ

gunther's right.....

my machine idles @ 5-10% with dream scene enabled
your benq joybook has a problem....

its either a lac of ram causing the CPU to work far harder....
or as gazz496 stated you may want to check the task manager for a rouge process swallowing power..??

my machine currently has 3gb (1 stick died) & its super responsive

i still maintain low spec laptops should NEVER run vista...;)

go with gunthers recomendation for the benq for more ram.

as for the dragon i would be looking at what apps you've got running at startup see if there are apps you don't need that are running.

I have 4GB of RAM and vista is currently using 1% CPU and 30% RAM. This leads me to believe it takes a little more than 1GB for itself. So if you only had 1GB...>_>.

your welcome. glad you fixed it. might wanna add more ram anyways.

as XP used about 350 or so MB RAM on idle.. and vista uses over 700MB of RAM idle.. thats doing NOTHING.. so you do one thing bigger than opening My Computer and your at all 1GB.. thats why vista should have a "requirement" of at least 2GB in all machines sold with it.

I'd recommend 2GB for sure, and 4GB to be safe.

The RAM usage seems understandable, but the CPU usage is too high for being "idle"...

I'll try to test it later. I'll leave my PC with 1GB and see what happens, I'm pretty sure it won't be 50% CPU...

It would be good to know the processes running when you leave that computer "idle"...

#Edit:

Alright, I've done the test. All fancy stuff on, except DreamScene. Not many things on the Sidebar. No extra software loaded at startup, like messengers, anti-virus and alike.

Basicly, after boot with only 1GB RAM, I've let the computer set for around 5 minutes... (I went to make me some tea and came back)

Memory Usage: 57%
Cpu Usage: 5% Averange, 10% top.

CPU: AMD 3500+ 2.2Ghz (OC 2.7Ghz)
RAM: 1GB

Closing the Sidebar didn't change much what I was seeing, just 1% drop on memory usage.

It was more smooth than what I expected, I think a PC ment for only office tasks could do well with 1GB only. (although putting another GB is rather cheap)

Nevertheless, tried to run Neverwinter Nights 2 and it sounded like it was crying... T.T

...excellent guys. All is all well now and thanks again. The dragon is now idle at 0%cpu and 35%mem, woohoo. Efficient system. Now for the windows experience index. Benq is 2.5 understandable, the dragon is a flat 5.

How does one now improve on this?
What makes for a better index score?

The dragon is running the X9000 intel, 2x320gig 7200rpm drives, wuxga display and nvidia 8800m gts graphics.
