Hello thx67, welcome to Vista Foeums!

Start by taking ownership of the HDD, have a look at the tutorial at the link below; be sure to post back to let us know how it goes.

Thanks for getting back so quick. I must apologise for being useless with pcs so apologies if my question wasnt worded very well. My problem seems to be restoring from a backup and im now thinking it could be the HDD. Basically I took my pc to be serviced and stupidly used the microsoft backup facility before it went in. Now I have plugged the hdd back in and it says there isnt any backup. However when I click on the Start. computer. Drives etc and go in to the external drive and look at the folders there are backup files listed but the restore facility doesnt seem to recognise them. I somehow managed to get into the files I needed (photos) and they came off the drive BUT I cannot view them as it says something like I dont have permission to view them. Hope that explains a little better. Thanks again for your help

run the elevated command prompt and run this command: net user administrator /active:yes

Then an administrator account will be enabled on your computer, use that account to do whatever you need to do if you are getting permission problems.

Hello thx67.

It's very irresponsible that someone has suggested that you enable that account for this purpose without some kind of warning to you about it, there are other, better ways to do what you need without putting the security of your PC at risk; if you do that please don't use it for everyday use, below is the warning from the tutorial on this subject.

warning   Warning

If you enable the hidden Built-in Administrator Account, it is recommended that you do not use this account all the time since everything installed and running on your computer will also have full access to computer too. Instead, I would recommmend that you use it for administrative purposes only, and then use a Standard or normal administrator user account that is restricted for everyday tasks for better security.

Ok, ive followed the steps to take ownership of the files. I got the scrolling messages piling down the screen but it looked like it says access denied as it processed them. I still cant view the pics? I have tried tinkering with the permissions settings but no luck. Could the files be corrupted. Im getting an error saying " an error ocurred while applying security information. Access denied"

The weird thing is i have somehow managed to access some of the pics? I did this before taking ownership? Its baffling me. Ive had a flick though other forums and there seem to be a lot of people who dont like vista. Im joining the club.

Thanks again to all who have replied.

Hello again.

Use this to take ownership of the files you need to retrieve, that should do it; then you should be able to move them where you need them.

My Computer

Just to add the what ive just said. Ive managed to get into the permission settings and im getting something like inherited permissions coming up? Is there some easy way to change these permissions that I dont know about? I have tried the right click way but it doesnt seem to do any good.

My Computer

Here I am again. Im minutes away from using a hammer. Ive got as far as permission and inherited permissions etc but I cannot grasp these settings. Basically every option I click results in access denied. I have changed ownership so I cant see the problem. It must lie in the permissions settings and the inherited section so any pointers would be appreciated....

Thanks in advance

Thanks again for the links. I seem to have the ownership thing sorted. When I click on the file, security etc the owner is now me. BUT my problem is now permissions which, like everything else isnt straightforward. Any links on how to sort that.

Thanks again for your help so far. Without your info I would have lost ALL my photos so im getting there. Just need that final mile....

My Computer

Howdy.

Right click an object you want to change the permission and select "Properties" then "Security" then select the one you want to change then give that user "Full Control" then click apply; close everything then you should have control of that object.

Hi again. Well, ive cracked it. I tried everything you mentioned and I still couldnt access the photos. In desperation I tried other more random ideas. I dragged the files onto a usb stick with a view to using my other laptop which doesnt go online (using the dodgy security method earlier in this thread). For some reason they appeared as thumbnails on the stick. I deleted the original files and copied them back to my pc? Weird but it works and im back in business so finally THANKS SO MUCH TO ALL who helped ESPECIALLY barefoot kid. I owe you a beer
