thats right...... the Phenom II 965 is faster than the I7 920 in several games and the i7 can only tie in the rest
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU Review - Page 1 - Another 200MHzConclusion
So, what should I talk about, first? Well, let's begin by what I think interests the most people: performance. How did your subject in this article, the Phenom II X4 965, perform when facing the offerings from the competitor? Let's recall the comparison with Intel's best Core 2 LGA775 processor, the QX9770, and the Core i7 920. If we compile all benchmarks run, we will see that in synthetic benchmarks, it is a tie between the X4 965 and the QX9770, but it simply could not manage to beat the Core i7 920. When it comes to gaming, which is the most important aspect for many people, it is not the same thing at all; the Phenom II X4 965 loses in three benchmarks out of five against the very expensive QX9770. Compared to the Q9650 which costs $70 more, the Phenom II 965 won four gaming tests, tieing for the fifth. And what about the similarly priced Core i7 920? Well, let's just say its low frequency did not allow it to beat the new Phenom II either. That's right, the Core i7 920 could not beat the 3.4GHz Phenom II in any of our gaming tests. It could only match it in two games out of five. This result I must admit astonished me. I expected it to lose since in gaming the Phenom II 955 already beat it a couple of times, but I did not imagine the difference would have been that much.
As for overclocking, I was happier with what I got from the 965 than I did with the 955. I was a bit deceived with the 3.2Ghz Phenom II since it did not overclock any better than the X4 940, however it is not the same thing with the 965. It can go quite a few MHz higher, both for a 24/7 stable overclock and a high clock meant for benchmarking. Therefore, I would pick the 965 over the 955 anytime. And supposedly, I with my 3914MHz fully stable overclock, I am still far from what others were able to reach.
The only thing that I can complain about really, is the power consumption which is many Watts higher at load compared to the X4 955. However I am confident AMD will be achieve manufacturing a 125W 3.4GHz Phenom II X4. If the engineers over at AMD were able to bring the 140W TDP down to 125W on the Phenom 9950, then the same should be possible with the Phenom II X4 965.
Overall, since the processor is keeping the same price point as the previous flagship, AMD has just increased the performance per dollar ratio one can get. AMD did a great job putting together the X4 965!
