Hello donfriesen. Please view your update history and tell us the Date Installed of your last successful batch of Windows updates. If you have manually installed any security updates since then, please tell us exactly which ones in order from bottom to top (just KB number will do, no need for the full description).

Thanks for the response to my plea for help.
1. I don't have an update history to refer to; this means nothing comes up- its empty, when I click on the 'view update history' link. I also have no hidden updates to unhide.
2. I have not manually installed any updates. I've tried to use stand alone installers without any success.
Don

Townsbg:
I was taken aback by the post/page count of the thread you referred to, and haven't yet yet read through it. But I did read through page 11 of the thread. Frankly, I wondered if this was a mistake referring me to this because much of it seemed unrelated to my problem, ie "
I am liking DuckDuckGo, I tried TOR but its real slow. VPN's might work better. CCleaner is good, I use that all the time.
I think even Yahoo saves your info, so I stopped using that too. Their news service is quite out there in left field. Reporting on stuff no one cares about to fill the pages. Most of the "news" is faked anyway. Glaring spelling mistakes. The writters are probably hired from Jr. High, or Nigeria. Saves them money I guess." and also "Here's something interesting perhaps: I came back from being away and upon boot got a message from Windows Defender that I hadn't updated for a while. (I hadn't received WIndows Updates for at least two weeks.) So I started Windows Updates but after an hour stopped it. I then opened Defender, searched for updates through it and received them in minutes." I'm not trying to be funny here or mock you. I appreciate the time you've offered to help but honestly wondered about the relevance of page 11 to my problem.

But concerning re-installing the Vista OS, I thought myself that was an option I might have to go through. Its not been very many months that I did exactly this and hoped that another solution was available. Does anyone have a reason why this update problem pops up and is there some way to prevent it from happening again?

Thanks for steering me to info about the correct order of installation of updates after re-installation of the Os

One last question. Does this conclude the advice I can expect to help solve my problem with updates or should I wait for some other which would save me the re-install? If not thanks to all for your help, Vistaar and Townsbg.

You really don't need to read the entire thread. What's important is to note that it is an ongoing issue and that some one has posted a work around. Namely installing the update's listed on the page mentioned in the thread. That page also has instructions on how to install them. That frequently (not always) helps with check time during which many users' systems slow down depending upon system resources. It sounds to me like that's what happening to you especially if you have automatic updating enabled which is why I posted that thread. Actually the last update cycle has been almost a month now. Regardless if you read that page the poster has theoried that Windows is checking for updates that has since been replaced. Personally I'm not sure why those updates help. As you can from our thread there really aren't any answers as to why this is happening or what we can do to permanently fix it. All we can do is check that page within a couple of days after patch Tuesday and see if the poster has added a new update to install manually. Now last month's manual update didn't help me at the time however last week I did 2 repair installs and each time installing the updates decreased check time to mere minutes. For your reference here is the webpage. Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution FYI next Tuesday is patch Tuesday so I would wait until Wednesday or Thursday before installing this month's updates.
