Power Problems after Microsoft downloads

Well didn't think I'd be back here again but... loaded what were supposed to be some IMPORTANT updates to my Vista Home Premium and now about everytime I go to turn it on I get no response ... haveta' pull power plug out, then power to the power strip, turn everything back on... it takes an eternity to load and then maybe it comes on..
Here's the recent updates could any of these be doing it?

Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - February 2009 (KB890830)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Vista (KB961260)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86
Update Rollup for ActiveX Killbits for Windows Vista (KB960715) (2 of those)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB958687)
And a whole bunch of Windows Defenders

If after reading the below things are still no good, please expand on what "no response" means. To me that means when you power your computer on, the screen stays black. I'm assuming some lights come on your computer such as the power light and hard drive light.

I pretty well install all Important and Critical updates from MS on my Home Premium machine and haven't run into any issues. I can't say I can specifically see those ones you refer to (especially as I'm not at home right now) but I wouldn't think you would have any issues from the Malicious Software Removal Tool, and I believe that's a pretty important IE 7 Security Update also (from memory that one fixes a gaping hole with passwords and created a big scare compain about internet banking, and other high security sites)

.NET framework updates should be OK, ditto the Defender updates.

What you could do is uninstall the ActiveX Killbits update, reboot and see how you go.

If you really think it's only since these updates that things have gone awry, you could uninstall them all but I recommend re-installing the IE 7 update.

Having said all that, if your problems are starting really early (such as before the machine even gets into Windows) then it's probably not a Windows problem as such, and more likely a hardware issue

When I say "no response"... I mean turtley dead! No lights at the power on button (although I did see one at the back) I unplugged and replugged the power cord from the hard drive.. nuthin', then killed the strip, had to do this at least 2x before it revived and took forever to boot.

I will uninstall and see if it makes a diff and then reinstall your suggested update.

I wouldn't bother looking for a software cause - the computer is borked on a hardware level.

Outright failure to react to the power button points to a problem way earlier in the startup sequence than where the software comes online and takes control.

This right here may be nothing or may be everything... am I to undestand that you are juicing your laptop or desktop plugged into a power strip and not direct or straight from the wall outlet?

I thought laptop, more than desktops, were finicky when it came to power and need to run at a constant voltage so, if you are running it from a power strip they are not getting the necessary 110v or even stable 110v.

I usually plug my pc or laptop direct to my UPS or Battery Back-Up Source, this way I know I always have a stable 110v current, the UPS, in turn, gets plugged directly into the wall.

Again... this may or may not be your problem.

Yes there are not enough outlets to go direct... I have ALWAYS used a good power strip and never had any problems until now... and this coming on the heels of those installed updates. I have just UN installed all of the updates and will monitor the situation and let everybody know the outcome. This could take a coulple of days.
Nothing else on the powerstrip has had any problems.

As others have mentioned, considering the nature of the issue (no power going to the PC) this probably won't be a Windows update or any other form of software issue, but far more likely a hardware issue

If other items on the power strip (I'm kind of guessing what one of those is) is having no problems and are staying powered on, then it's probably not this either, and more likely something to do with the PC itself

Probably worth taking it to someone that can pull it apart and troubleshoot better. Could be something as simple as the power supply, could be something as drastic as the motherboard

Hi! the other items on the power strip, a clock, the monitor, speakers, hispeed internet box are just fine... by the by, since I uninstalled everything that was installed the day stuff started going bad there have been no problems.

I know it could be coincidental... but I'm just going to have to live with it awhile to see if anything else materializes. I'm in a totally rural area and really don't want to get into any disassembly here. Already went crazy trying to get my HP PSC500 printer to work and my speakers went out (with this forums help got both of those going) so I'm printing everything out on this power problem.

Not sure what the recommended Ie7 update involves or why I should install this? Not a computer geek here (but I do wear glasses) could I get an explanation on that?

Hopefully someone else has some answers, as I can't remember the exact details. I remember this issue got widespread press coverage though, and the update is rated as critical

Glasses (or bi-focals) are normally prescribed for any person that needs an ocular aid. Therefore people, other than just geeks, with poorer eyesight can wear them...... not the explanation you were looking for

Honestly those updates shouldn't cause a power failure. The unresponsiveness may be the framework and a particular app you are using that has become incompatible.

Does it say configuring updates or anything while loading? Do you have the same issues booting into safe mode?

Okayyyy... remember novice here.. slow large type verbiage required. The downloads took a long time and at one point when I had the power problem I did have to go into safe mode to get everything back. I have noticed that 2 before unnoticed updates were done (can't remember seeing them on the orignal list that I allowed) Hotfix for Microsoft.Net framework 3.5 SP1. They don't appear on the "View Update History" but they exist on the "installed" updates.

As of yet I have not banished them.

On the IE7 stuff.. there was a "Current Security Update for IE7 for Win.Vista KB961260" Do you think that was the one I should restore?

Still no power probs, and yeah, I do understand that the relationship might be coincidental.. In my former field I was in Telecom and we had days on a cut (change of PBX system) where things would go wrong (like the entire NorthEast AT+T system going down) where the customer would assume it was something our programmer had done! So maybe I need to reinstall these one at a time... the old put it in place and see if it fails theory.:eek:

Just an update here... no trubba! since I uninstalled all of those updates (only reinstalling the IE7..961260) not a flicker of a power prob.
