Printer Won't Install...

Hello there.

I have been trying to install brother MFC 490cw printer for a while now.
At first, I tried using the CD, it went through all normal installation processes until I was asked to plug the USB port (this USB port is not the one that came with the printer, does that matter...?) - when I plugged it, and turned it on, - as per its instructions and then it also says wait for the installation process to continue - it never continues and just stays like that forever...

So, I tried going to Control Panel, Add a printer... etc I did everything and it got added but it won't print and its status is ''error'' . So that did not work either...

Help Please?

Try to do a system restore to a previous point BEFORE you installed/tried to install the printer software.
How to: Vista Forums- System Restore
After that, plug the USB in then go to Printers and click Add a Printer. When it comes to the driver, select "Have Disk..." and navigate to your printer software disc. Look for a .inf file and click on "Open". Let the driver install.

Good luck!

Hey there... when I press Add a printer it gives me 2 choices : Add a local printer, or Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.
I think the obvious one would be local but underneath it, it says : Use this option only if you don't have a USB printer (Windows automatically installs USB printers when you plug them in) and since I have a USB and it wasn't automatically installed...
What should I do...?

My Computer

So I chose Local... and and pressed Have Dish and installed the driver and in the end it said : Printer successfully installed.
But when I try printing there is no reaction at all, and its status is ''error''.
I don't think the printer detects any connection to the machine at all.
Could this be a problem with the USB? Its new... but maybe incompatible with the printer..?
Help pleeeaaaase?:(

That's weird. Give me a screenshot of the error. I'm quite stumped.

I have a Vista Home Premium acer. USB on front and rear of the desktop.

I plugged the USB cable from my printer into the front USB, printer not recognized.

Plugged the USB cable into the rear of the desktop, printer works fine now.

I have no idea why the difference.

So, where did you plug your printer into ?

@jimjoe: I honestly plug it into the front. It seems like a faulty port. Contact Acer if you are under warranty and they should fix it for you.

Other things on my computer work on the front ports. I bought a USB 500 gig hard drive and I was copying files over to it. Seemed rather slow, KB transfer rates. I moved the cable to a rear USB port, the transfer rates jumped to the 6 MB/second rate.

So maybe my front ports aren't USB 2.0.
