Congratulations on finding a solution to the Windows Update problem! If you go to C:\Windows\system32, right-click on wuaueng.dll (Greek file name might not end with “eng”) and select Properties, is it version 7.6.7600.256 or some other version? (It should not appear in Installed Updates, but might appear in Update History.)

That might help resolve the problem.

That file was certainly not present in your Vista RTM recovery partition, so apparently it IS still available from Microsoft (although there is no standalone installer). I was under the impression that Microsoft had discontinued automatic updating of the Update Agent - not only for Vista but also for Windows 7 (although there is a standalone installer for the Windows 7 version). @Volume Z might be able to comment on that. The discontinuation of automatic selfupdate is a whole nother issue. It applies to Windows 7 SP1 and 8 exclusively. In case it applies to other versions, it's just not distinguishable from Windows Update discontinued. At any rate it's not possible to restore Windows Update by patching and not restore automatic selfupdate as well.

The standalone installer is Windows Update Agent 7.6. It's being applied in the above video:



So Build 7.6.7600.256 can be installed even two ways.

When Windows Update gets restored by patching in Windows 7 RTM through 8, automatic selfupdate returns there, too.

Okay, that YouTuber has a corresponding blogspot post with a link for an x64 installer, and perhaps soneigr was able to get a 32-bit version by modifying the last part of the URL? I have searched for that installer more than once without any success.

For clarity, you are suggesting the same downloads offered there for Windows 7 SP1, is that correct? (The linked page never once mentions Vista or even Server 2008 SP2.) This old guru is very easily confused.

Back in the old days you could’ve used Windows Anytime Upgrade within the UI and made a payment to Microsoft, but those days are long gone now. Personally, I was quite satisfied with Home Premium.
