Problem with new Vista installation

I recently replaced the hard drive in my HP dv9000 laptop and had to buy a recovery disc from HP. I installed the new hard drive and then ran the System Recovery DVD. Windows is now in the computer but it does not operate properly. The screen resolution is too large and the system shuts down after appx. 3 to 5 minutes. It then restarts repeatedly. In addition, the wireless has been disabled. I have attempted to restart in safe mode, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions?

Regarding installing the Recovery disk...I made sure that the computer would boot from the DVD drive. The DVD booted and asked if I wanted to proceed to restore the computer to its original software configuartion. I agreed to proceed. After the computer had loaded the DVD I was asked if I had any add'l DVDs to load. I did not. The computer then began loading software. That took about an hour or more with the computer stopping and restarting periodically. When Windows was loaded, I was able to turn the computer on and Vista was loaded. I was able to identify the wireless network and check out some of the loaded software ( none of which I use ) Windows shut the computer down after about 3 minutes and restarted again. It did this continually, until I actually manually shut the computer down. It continues to do this now. I have started the computer in "safe mode" with no shut down problems. And, now I am doing a comprehensive hard disk check to rule out a hard disk problem.
Not sure how to proceed from here. The disk that I was sent was a recovery disk. Perhaps, I should try to install a full version of Vista. Or, can I install a version of XP that I have and dispense with Vista entirely?

a recovery disc will not re-install a version of an o/s completely, you need a fully fledged vista install disc to install a complete version of vista onto the new hard-drive

If Vista came preinstalled contact your computer manufacturer. Indicate that you want an install DVD. They will give it to you for cost, approximately $25.00.
Wish you luck.

Thanks for your reply. I told the parts guy at HP that I had to reinstall windows on a new hard drive and he sent me a System Recovery DVD. Hope that they make good on it !! I suppose that since there is nothing on the system, that this recovery DVD is useless. Another thought, would I be able to eliminate vista all together and install windows 7 instead?
