problems with messenger

Hi
i want to install msn messenger on vista
but it tells me to install the new updates & service pack
the problem is that when i installed them i could't start windows
i had to insert the win dvd & do a repair
so how to install messenger without these updates?
(i don't want to use the online ver & a replacment like trillian)

i cant install messenger it says that i need to install the updated & service pack
