Product Key help.

I feel horrible for making so much threads, aha!
Anyhow I am having a bit of a problem here.

My computer is fine and everything but... Windows Activation is what's getting to me.
I have found the Product Key that I need to activation it but I get this;

"The product key you have entered appears to be a default product key and cannot be used for activation. Type a different Vista Home Basic product key."

Is there a way I can request a new product key? Or anything of the sort? Please and thank you.

I am sorry but we really can't help you with that. There should be an option for phone activation. That will give you a number to the happy Microsoft licensing/activation people. Perhaps they will help you activate it.

PLease post an MGADiag report of your system - the erro message you quote is not one that I've ever heard of!

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

I think the reason you get this message is because on OEM preinstalled systems you are talking about 2 different product keys:

1. The key with which the OEM system came. That is a key that the OEMs use to make mass initializations of their products. But that is NOT YOUR key.

2. YOUR KEY is the one that is on the COA sticker that is somewhere on the box (e.g. on the bottom of a laptop). So if you reinstall the system with some other installation DVD (other than the one you burnt from the recovery partition or what you got from the OEM), then you have to use the key from the COA sticker.

You may be right but the OP should be able to call the MS activation hotline, give them what they ask for, and follow their instructions on activating it. I would try that first. It may be a pain but it could prevent a reinstall. If he convinces them that it is his copy they'll be able to help manually activate it. That is what they do.

By definition, the Default Key is the one that the system uses when no key is entered at installation. The Default Key cannot be activated, as it is blocked from activation at the MS servers.
Under most circumstances, it is not possible even to persuade the machine to connect to the activation servers, as an internal filter recognises that he Key was not input, and requests a change of Key before connection, or before using the telephone service.
One possible cause for the OP's situation is registry corruption, which may have removed the proper Key from the system without somehow imposing the local block. Often in this type of case, there are other problems which may prevent activation. An MGADiag report can isolate many of these problems, so that they can be fixed, and activation can occur normally.
