Solved Programs ask me what program to run it with.

Hi guys.

I was using a proxy site that I used to use at school. I wanted to shut down my YouTube account. I don't know what happened, but I shut down that webpage, then my Anti-Virus (AVG) popped up saying that Malware was detected. It was in my temporary folder, something like QH something.

I moved it normally to the virus vault and permanently got rid of it.

But then, when I try to start up any program, it asks me which program I want to run it with. Like, I try to run Internet Explorer, and it pops up with a webpage, then a download thing comes up saying if I want to download IE (Run, Save) I just click run, and it cycles through. This happens with any program.

What has happened? I haven't downloaded anything dodgy.

Peter,
The virus may have made some changes to the computer, which can account for your problem.
I would try to use system restore to go back to a point in time before any problems. Go back far enough to avoid getting the virus, again.

If that does not work or if you do not have the restore points. Go to search by the start button and type the word default.
In default programs, manually set up the programs that should be the default to open all that it can.

If this does not work, we may have to work with associations.

No I can't run system restore: It won't open any .exe files and system restore runs on an .exe file apparently.

But what about being able to run my own programs when I set up the default?

My dad says that I should run in safe mode: would that make any difference?

I rarely turn down a suggestion, so give safe mode a try, but I doubt if that will work. Safe mode has nothing to do with your problem.
Go to default and set up what you can. Then lets see what problems, you still have.
If you do not have success, try to reset the exe and lnk (LNK) associations.

Thank you so much. I simply double clicked the .reg file that I downloaded.

Well, to be excact, I downloaded it from my sister's laptop then put it on a memory stick, then double clicked the .reg file. It did display an error message that some things did not happen or something? But it still works. My computer is now running a whole computer scan for viruses. Again, thank you very much.

Hi
I have th exact same problem but can't understand how you fixed it. I'm not that tech savvy. Can u please explain how to solve this problem step by step. As you said system restore won't work due to being an executable.
Thanx

Hi Hosea

The csrss.exe file is normally located in the System32 folder.
The one in your Temp folder is most likely a virus.
You should delete this file.
Use Unlocker if it is not possible to delete it.

Hope this helps

Hello All,
I would Advise to be careful when using system restore when infected, Sometimes the infection(s) hide in the restore points, making it harder to restore windows to a previous state.
You can restore this ".EXE" problem by running this Command in Command prompt through >RUN>cmd:

Windows Repair hides all files on the system, you can restore them one by one, or I found this command you can enter in the command prompt to fix it.

attrib.exe -h c:\*.* /s /d

I have already right clicked that fake csrss and scanned it with anti spyware so now it is gone. (it wouldnt let me delete it) but the same alert message still comes up and no executable file will open. i am going to try hopefully what i think the above person did after downloading the .reg file on another pc. hope it works.
